An article I posted early mentioned apps that remind you that you’re going to die, so I thought I’d compile a list of them here for you all to look at. This is not currently a strategy I’m using, but some may find it helpful:
WeCroak was mentioned in the article. From its website, it was inspired by the Bhutanese saying “to be a happy person, one must contemplate death five times daily” – and that’s what the app does. The notifications come at random, so you can’t set the time.
Memento Mori: The Stoic Way, is another reminder app, inspired simply by that saying “remember, you will die”. The app doesn’t provide random messages, but it does include a “time clock” and daily quotes, so that may remind you of death at least once a day.
Memento Mori Meditation Timer allows you to set up the number of notifications, as well as puts it within times you are probably awake. The app also works offline, which may appeal to some! When the notification arrives, you’re supposed to take a moment to “meditate” on your mortality.
Daily Death Reminder allows you to set the notifications, however many you want, however often you want – however the reminder is always the same: “You will die someday”. Perfectly blunt.
Who Has Died Recently isn’t a reminder app, but worthy of a mention, as you can see who’s died recently – easily – and pay tribute virtually through the app and commiserate with others. It’s a way to remind yourself of death, through other people passing away. Â
A month or more I read an interesting article about how people who are conscious of their own mortality are more judicious and efficient at how they use their time.
Part of the study was to find out how to keep this thought in people's minds while not overpowering them. This one study said that if you get 5 random reminders a day, you will naturally adopt the mindset.
I've been giving it a run - I use an app 'wecroak' that randomly pops up a reminder of my mortality. If you pop it open they have a nice quote too.
Based on my own circumstantial evidence, it seems to work. I've noticed I am not wasting as much time as I used to in the past.
“When people know they are going to die, that last year is often the most conscious, and most caring—even under conditions of poor concentration, the side effects of medication, and so on. So don’t wait to die until you die. Start practicing now.”
