WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Back in the 1950s, the fathers of the field Minsky and McCarthy, described artificial intelligence as any task performed by a program or a machine that, if a human carried out the same activity, we would say the human had to apply intelligence to accomplish the task.

AI systems will typically demonstrate at least some of the following behaviors associated with human intelligence: planning, learning, reasoning, problem solving, knowledge representation, perception, motion, and manipulation and, to a lesser extent, social intelligence and creativity.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF AI?

At a very high-level artificial intelligence can be split into two broad types: narrow AI and general AI.

Narrow AI is what we see all around us in computers today: intelligent systems that have been taught or learned how to carry out specific tasks without being explicitly programmed how to do so.

This type of machine intelligence is evident in the speech and language recognition of the Siri virtual assistant on the Apple iPhone, in the vision-recognition systems on self-driving cars, in the recommendation engines that suggest products you might like based on what you bought in the past. Unlike humans, these systems can only learn or be taught how to do specific tasks, which is why they are called narrow AI.

WHAT ARE THE USES FOR AI?

They are many ways to use AI technology in our life.

*  Automated Transportation

*  Cyborg Technology

* Taking over dangerous jobs

*  Solving climate change

*  Robot as friends

*  Improved elder care and so on.

From now on I’d like to talk more about narrow AI.

-AI assistants

It depends on which factor you are interested, will be different. Most common example of AI in modern age is SIRI from apple, Google assistant, Cortana from Microsoft etc. Those are basically for supporting our daily lives. Back in days these AI supporters wasn’t that developed enough and you barely see small differences. However, depends on each developer and users the gap between those becoming bigger. For example, Google recently announced impressive penetration into third-party hardware. Specifically, in four months, it tripled the number of hardware devices that use Assistant — from January to now, they rose from 1,500 devices to 5,000. (Amazon still dominates, with 12,000 devices.)

Google launched Assistant globally this year and promises to expand from eight languages to “more than 30” by the end of the year.

Lots of people love Google Assistant. Literally! When Google launched the Google Home device in India last month, Google executive Rishi Chandra said that some 450,000 Indians had proposed marriage to Google Assistant.

One reason for all that love is that Google Assistant is better, according to one report. A study published this week by the digital marketing firm Stone Temple found that Google Assistant is more accurate than Amazon’s Alexa, Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana. (Siri was found to be least accurate.)

Near future possibilities for AI assistants

During the last Google conference, they introduced new future to the audience. The future was basically your assistant will talk on the phone for you. When you are busy or not available to take your phone, your assistant will replace your place. It’s not something like leaving voice record but the AI will communicate based on speaker’s answers and questions. Although, it’s still on beta version it was working completely fine, in addition you can see how they worked on the AI voice impressions to make it more human like. It’s no secret that people are comfortable around more human like AI.

- AI gaming world

One of the most important traits of AI is constantly learning process. One thing that really seems interesting to me is how AI doing great job in gaming world. I’m not talking about chess or check because those are more like sports.

In video games, artificial intelligence (AI) is used to generate responsive, adaptive or intelligent behaviors primarily in non-player characters (NPCs) similar to human-like intelligence. Artificial intelligence has been an integral part of video games since their inception in the 1950s. The role of AI in video games has expanded greatly since its introduction. Modern games often implement existing techniques from the field of artificial intelligence such as pathfinding and decision trees to guide the actions of NPCs. Additionally, AI is often used in mechanisms which are not immediately visible to the user, such as data mining and procedural-content generation.

Near future of video gaming with AI

It’s very young since video gaming developed to become E-sport. Following that reason pro players has started to born. When I was in high school, I used to watch one of those E-sport competitions. Every year players were becoming more talented and faster due to the developers started to face problems such as too many pro players in the same game area, it was hard to manipulate their skills. But during the Dota2 champion ship 2014 they introduced self-learning NPC and started to challenge most pro players. The game itself has many opportunities to play the game but the AI was beating the pro players one by one and eventually there is no human being can defeat that NPC anymore.

Self-learning NPC’s are already starting dominate the video gaming world. However, it was still long way to go because of RTS (real-time Strategy) games until now. I heard about StarCraft started their AI competition among people against bot to foster and evaluate progress of AI research. The game itself can be really complicated because of tone of NPCs and possibilities.

Conclusion

Naast de duidelijke focus op het potentieel van technologische innovatie, kan je Her ook op een meer ethische en gevoelsmatige manier bekijken. Als een relatie met een computer sociaal aanvaard wordt, wat zegt dat dan over onze opvatting van liefde? Al in januari 2014, kort na de release van Her dus, schreef Eleanor Robertson, een journaliste bij The Guardian, een artikel over die ethische vragen die gepaard gaan met technologische vooruitgang. Zij geeft een zeer kritische kijk op de storyline van Her en benoemt verschillende knelpunten in de loop van het romantische verhaal dat Spike Jonze zijn publiek voorschotelt. Ze kaart bijvoorbeeld aan dat al vrij vroeg in het verhaal, Samantha toegeeft dat ze weet dat Theodore recent gescheiden is, omdat ze heel zijn e-mail geschiedenis heeft doorgelezen. Dit stelt de hele relatie-kwestie in een ander daglicht. Wat als iemand die je net hebt leren kennen al meteen alles van je af weet, je hele browsergeschiedenis kan bekijken en elke digitale stap die je ooit gezet hebt kan bestuderen? Kan je dan op een normale manier een relatie opbouwen? Zeker als deze alwetendheid maar eenzijdig is, zou dit eerder afschrikwekkend zijn dan aantrekkelijk, toch?

Strong vs. weak AI

Samantha wordt voorgesteld als strong AI “a conscious being that emerges from a non-organic machine.” (Eleanor Robertson, 2013). Dit betekent dat ze quasi-equivalent is aan een echte persoon: ze heeft een innerlijk leven, voorkeuren en doelen. Bij strong AI, ook wel full AI genoemd, wordt het verschil tussen een computer en het menselijk brein zeer miniem. Zwakke AI is de vorm van AI die wij tot op vandaag kennen: robots of computers die vragen kunnen beantwoorden, gezichtsuitdrukkingen tonen en in staat zijn specifieke taken te volbrengen, maar geen bewustzijn of gevoelens hebben. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan Siri of Alexa.

In de huidige maatschappij is sterke AI eerder een droom dan een werkelijkheid. We zijn er nog niet in geslaagd een computer te creëren die functioneert zoals een mens, zoals Samantha in de film. Of dit een onhaalbare fantasie is of eerder een project voor in de nabije toekomst, is al onderwerp van debat sinds het begin van de ontwikkeling van artificiële intelligentie.  

Human-robot relationships

In 2008 schreef David Levy het boek ‘Love and Sex with Robots - The evolution of Human-Robot Relationships’. Hij stelt dat relaties tussen robots en mensen in de toekomst schering en inslag zullen zijn. Bij dit soort denkbeelden is het belangrijk het verschil te benadrukken tussen een relatie met een object, een robot die bevelen kan opvolgen, en een relatie zoals in Her, met een vrijwel volledig zelfstandige mensachtige computer. In het traditionele idee van liefde, is het nodig je partner te leren kennen om inzicht te krijgen in diens innerlijke leven. Bij een robot zou dit overbodig worden, aangezien er geen sprake is van een psyche. Als we robots echt als potentiële levensgezellen kunnen aanschouwen, betekent dit dat ook ons idee van relaties en liefde aangepast wordt door technologie. Dat deze kwestie van belang is, wordt duidelijk door de veelvuldige organisaties die proberen dit onderwerp aan te kaarten. Zo publiceerde de Deense Council of Ethics enkele jaren geleden al een rapport o.a. over sociale robots, robot-wetten enzovoort. Ook vindt er sinds 2015 jaarlijks een congres plaats genaamd ‘International Congress on Love and Sex with Robots’ (gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van Levy), waar topics als Robot Emotions, Humanoid Robots, Affective Approaches, Roboethics enzovoort uitgebreid aan bod komen. Dit zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden die aantonen dat de vraag ‘Mag/kan ik verliefd worden op mijn OS?’ wel degelijk van toepassing zijn bij de huidige ontwikkelingen van deze technologie.

Love story in Her

Bij het kijken van de film Her kunnen veel vragen gesteld worden, maar wat we ons zeker moeten afvragen is het volgende: op wie of wat wordt Theo eigenlijk verliefd: op zijn computergestuurde dienstmeid? Of is Samantha in dienst van het bedrijf dat haar gecreëerd heeft en is ze geprogrammeerd om aantrekkelijk te zijn voor Theo? Als ze dan toch zo menselijk is, is het dan niet illegaal om haar te bezitten? In haar artikel haalt Eleanor Robertson terecht aan dat films die betrekking hebben tot artificiële intelligentie de kijker zou moeten uitnodigen na te denken over deze onderwerpen, in plaats van robots te gebruiken als het zoveelste nieuwe technologische snufje. Er zijn veel vragen waarvoor Spike Jonze zijn kijkers geen tijd of aanleiding geeft om een mening over te vormen. Hij presenteert een wereld waar deze relevante kwesties schijnbaar onbelangrijk zijn, wat de film aan geloofwaardigheid doet inboeten.
