Marvel æsir comic selfie
Holding up a copy of the 1976 comic book: “Marvel Spotlight On #3 Fandral, Hogun, Volstagg: Warriors Three” in my room in Barangay IVC (Industrial Valley Complex), Marikina City.
The comic is a Philippine version that was printed by Indicia / Colophon Publishers, and distributed by National Book Store in 1978. In fact, National Book Store was able to get the rights to reprint 727 various issues of Marvel and DC comic books from 1972 to 1980. This issue was written by Len Wein (1948-2017) and penciled by John Buscema (1927-2002)
Because of this comic, I was an instant fan of the comedic portrayal of the Warriors Three, with the swashbuckling Fandral the Dashing, the brooding Hogun the Grim, and the raucous Volstagg the Voluminous. Lee and Kirby designed the Warriors Three on notable characters; such as Fandral was based on the matinee idol Errol Flynn (1909-1959), Hogun was based on the movie tough guy Charles Bronson (born Charles Dennis Buchinsky; 1921-2003), and Volstagg was based on the Shakespearean character Sir John Falstaff.
The Warriors Three were presented as warriors-in-arms with Thors, and they first appeared in the 1965 issue of “Journey into Mystery #119” and they were created by Stan Lee (1922-2018) and Jack Kirby (1917-1994).
I was happy to see their portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the 2011 film “Thor”, but I did not enjoy lack of character development in the 2013 movie “Thor: The Dark World”, and I was saddened by their deaths in the 2017 flick “Thor: Ragnarok”.
