Tricking myself into character art by drawing WTA characters for friends. Lark & Ellie here for #werewolfwednesday
A funny event that occurred in our chronicle.
For fun, I've recently started drawing city maps meant for like, world of darkness city settings
Here's the 1st one I've drawn, intentionally left without any game specific labels so that people can fill it in and customize it into whichever game they are using
New Orleans, Louisiana
(Population statistics circa 2025)
Shaking up my stream of VtM posts with a WtA post My first game of Werewolf was a really eye opening experience for me roleplay-wise. I've always tended to play very bitter, rageful characters in TTRPGs who've been wronged in the past and lash out over it. My favorite Clan is Brujah, fyi. But in the past, I've caused a lot of friction at tables by having my characters act out or do irrational things as a result of their rage. Legitimately been kicked out of groups before for having characters lash out against authority in ways that make sense. So Werewolf was a very freeing experience for me. The Rage is the point. You're allowed, and expected, to be angry at the world and to lash out at it. It's the central catharsis of the game, and if you point yourself in the right direction you can even be rewarded in that rage. My favorite Tribe is the Get of Fenris, which often gets boiled down in the community by people who don't get them as just "the really strong angry ones" or "the N*zi ones." Which pisses me off. I mean, I'm pissed at White Wolf for writing about the small contingent of the Get who sided with facists, but also upset at the community that despite all the rich lore about the Get, they get boiled down to just "the racist wolves." A little bit about my spiritual background: raised Christian, drifted away from the church and into pagan practices as a teenager and young adult, became a Christian again for a couple years because I never really got over the fear of hell trauma from childhood, before breaking away again and fully embracing my pagan spirituality. I'm specifically a heathen Pagan, which means I worship the Norse gods. And this practice, involves a lot of Rage. I Rage that I only get to know my gods through the snippets that have floated down through Christian authors. I Rage that I can't learn Seidr or how to read the runes the way my spiritual forebears would. I Rage that so much of that spiritual culture was obliterated by Christianity. I Rage that greedy, bigoted men a thousand years before I was born took away the stories and practices of my gods. And I Rage especially that the most heinous ideology in human history had a brief effort to "revive" that spiritual heritage, and that some of the worst hate groups in the modern day appropriate the imagery of my faith and gods to serve their own agendas. More than that though, I seriously Rage at the fact that the authors of Werewolf 5th edition turned the entire Get of Fenris into unplayable antagonists and wrote them all off as N*zi wolves. I need you to understand that the division between Folkish (this means Racist) and Inclusive Heathens is one of the most sensitive subjects within Heathen communities, as is the appropriation of our symbols by hate groups. I had a really meaningful experience playing my first WtA game where I played a young Heathen woman who underwent her first Change, and finally had a direction to point her Rage in. Destroying the Banes that dwelt in the Umbral reflections of churches, courthouses, and prisons, fighting against those that had appropriated her faith's imagery, and got some tremendous spiritual connection from being able to talk to the Patron of her own people, the Great Fenris wolf who understood her Rage and taught her how to become strong through it. I don't say I hate W5 easily. I don't like V5, but I can still engage with V5 content and the community around it, because most of the things I don't like about V5, V5 fans also don't like about V5. But W5 is hard, especially people who assert what happened to the Get was a good change in some way. Werewolf the Apocalypse 5th edition took something extremely sensitive to my faith and culture, and just said "Nah anyone who associates with this is a racist N*zi.) And that fucking sucks. Anyways, fuck W5, all my homies hate W5

I think Werewolf is an inherently queer medium
This is all a part of a larger long-term project.
I am trying to hold the World of Darkness to higher standards of inclusivity

Werewolf: the Essentials Project Update 04/02/2025
Hello, Kinfolks. Woof. What a time to be alive. This is a period that's been reflected many, many times in the past under many different names. It seems like every time I pick up my phone there is always some new awful thing awaiting us. The intentional composition of the writers on this team are diverse and come from cultures across the world, and what ties us together has been our queerness, our passion for Werewolf, and our commitment to let our passions fuel our writing. The result has been a product that shows the passion from one page to the next.
In short, the state of the world has impacted the pace at which we're working on the book. The priority right now is survival, and surviving is the task that has consumed most of the attentions of those helping with W:tE. It should come as no surprise that people who passionately care about Werewolf also care about the world around them at large, and that is exactly what many of us are doing.
All the same, what's agreed between everyone on the team is that we all feel the work we're doing matters, and in many ways it can be a good way to keep one busy when the other option is the good-old doomscroll. And so, work is still happening, and beyond that, its starting to pick up again.
So, what work remains?
Writing
Writing is more or less finished. Editing is ongoing and as small issues or missing mechanics come up we've been working them in. Chapters 1-7 are complete, and Chapter 8, our storytelling and chronicle section, is in its last few pages before calling it done. We have a small number of writers still working on this, and so far we're looking at 100 Rite of Passage Story Seeds, and 40-60 Cliath Story Seeds. All in all we're handing Storytellers enough game material to be able to keep their tables plenty busy for at least a year of weekly game sessions. Also as a spitball number, by the time this book hits shelves we are looking to be at around 450 pages.
Layout
We are at the 75% complete mark! Chapter 6 of 8 is underway. Due to an influx of support, we're able to have one of our editors pick up work on a more daily basis, so this process should similarly be speeding up in the immediate future. It always feels like the work is neverending, but slowly and surely we're making progress. I've promised myself once this book enters preflight I'm taking a long vacation.
Now, onto the fun stuff:

So I was not expecting to publish another W5 rant so soon, but dear lord this preview of the Umbra book is bad. Let's start with the first issue; Again, we are told that the best way to keep history is to write it down. The idea that there is zero downtime where stories are shared is frankly baffling. Every single gathering of people I've been to has had stories shared. Second, "Garou are not a culture one is born into", and "Those joining in the ranks are usually young adults, already preoccupied with the concerns of this modern world." First of all, even if one isn't born into a culture, joining a tribe should include having the basics of the tribal culture shared. Unless the implication is that Patrons just accept garou willy nilly without the input of the tribe. (Also, no one is born into a vampire clan and yet THEY get to have histories.) Second; before W5 came out, I joked about garou in W5 being basically weekend warriors. This text implies that, yes, garou do garou stuff on the side while their main concern is their mortal life. Rage Dice making that hard has clearly not crossed the writer's mind. Once more, when a group of people gather, they tell stories. Whether it is joining the army, joining a new job, moving to a new place, etc. There is always some oral history going on.
To say garou, unique out of all supernaturals, have zero history because they die so quick is to ignore just how common oral history is. Also, Cult of Fenris is made up of people who are so far gone into their madness that they cannot be reached. BSDs can, but not CoF. People like that aren't going to be that strategic.
