The meaning of (working) life, Ver.1.6.3
I am researching the use of Collective Awareness Platforms in monitoring censorship & partisan media in repressive states and conflict zones, developing a prototype platform drawing on existing research into the ‘information ecosystems’ in which independent media operates.
Separately, I’m tracking the impact of nationalist & sectarian politics on these ecosystems for a MSc dissertation, testing established nationalism theory against concepts of IS as Islamist ‘virtual state’ or neo-Arab nationalist social movement, in terms of media narrative and identity framing.
I’m also studying the crossover of digital media tools & advocacy techniques in repressive states & conflict zones, particularly regarding online media ethics, freedom of expression, the representation of dissent & political communication.
I’m particularly interested in challenging the view that greater freedom of expression through new and old media, and/or freedom of association in the form of participatory politics, increases the threat or scale of violence in conflicted, closed or transitional states.
Organisationally I work with associates & partners under a non-profit company, Vivarta, a digital media news lab and international advocate for free expression rights.
As vivarta.org we help defend free expression in conflict zones and repressive states with investigative reporting and creative advocacy carried out from the Free Word Centre in Farringdon, London. As vivarta.com we develop new digital media, security and situational analysis tools to support this work from the Google TechHub start-up incubator near Old Street.
