Dean pauses the movie. Looks up. Thereâs Sam, mouth catchinâ flies, right in the door. While Deanâs tryinâ to have a night to himself in front of their not-haunted TV screen.
âAll right,â Dean says, after waiting a niceân generous stretch of time for Sam to finish his sentence. âScintillating, man.â
âNo, I justââ Sam clears his throat, and steps in, and Dean watches his mouth twitch. âI mean, drag queens?â
Itâs chill. If anyoneâs gonna be chill about this, itâs Sam. Still, Deanâs shoulders creep up even higher, and he can feel the tension in the middle of his shoulders. âItâs Swayze, dude,â he says. Slugs half a beer and adds, âSwayze always gets a pass.â
âYeah, I meanââ Sam blows out a breath and says, âJesus Christ, Iâm coming at it all wrong. I just mean, you look fuckinââ tense as hell, sitting there. You donât have to watch that stuff if you donât like it.â
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â Dean tries to see it from Samâs angle, but he canât get it. Why the hell would he watch something he didnât want to?
Sam freezes. He says, âOh.â And he comes right over and sits next to Dean, taking up half the couch. His little brother got too damn big at college and Deanâll never be over it.
Dean looks over, but Sam doesnât look like heâs about to say anything else, so Dean puts his beer down and hits play again. Sheriff Dollard â the asshole â is feelinâ up Vida Bohemeâs skirt, and Deanâsâ Deanâsâ
âYou okay, man?â Sam asks, knee bobbing, while Dean hunches forward, shoulders angled towards the TV, stressed like anything.
âJust donât want anythinâ bad to happen to âem,â Dean mutters, watching. And then â thank fuck â Vida kicks him off her, and heâs on the ground. âHa. Got it cominâ, asshole.â
âNice.â Sam relaxes, too, leans back while the girls worry over what to do about the cop facedown on the ground. âYou seen this before?â
âNo, I.â Dean swallows. He doesnât look at Sam. He says, âJody recommended it.â
âOh?â Dean risks a glance over, and Samâs smiling a little. âThatâs nice, man. Didnât realize Jody was into that.â
âInto what?â Dean asks, prickly, even thoughâ of course he knows. Sam didnât realize Jody was into gay shit. The kind of gay shit Dean shouldnât be watching, really, considering who he is. What he is.
Sam shrugs. âDrag, I guess,â he says. âNot like cops have a friendly relationship with queer people, is all.â
âYou know all about it, huh,â Dean asks, as the girls recover at a rest stop.
âI did drag in college.â
What. Dean pauses the movie again. He looks right at Sam. âWhat?â
âIââ Sam laughs, and his hair sways with it. âI dunno why I thought you already knew that. Yeah, man. Like, I only got in drag twice, I think, butâ half the people in law school are millionaires with coke habits and the other half are there for, like, humanitarian law or whatever. Drag queens fit in pretty well with both crowds.â
âThe things you learn about a guy.â Dean swallows. Quietly, he asks, âYou, uh, ever think about⌠pickinâ it back up?â
âNot really, no,â Sam says thoughtfully. âNot now. Thereâs a lot ofâ itâs a little too, uh, visible. Being on display. Not my thing these days.â
Dean thinks about that. He thinks about the idea of itâ putting makeup on, seeinâ someone he chose in the mirror. Wearing something beautiful andâ andâ and queer, Jesus, gettinâ on stage and having people look at him and think heâs a goddamn queer and think heâs beautiful for it. âSeems fun,â he croaks out, looking back to the screen. He canât really say anything else about it.
Sam doesnât say anything for a moment. Before Dean can press play again, though, he asks, âDo you wanna know how it ends?â
Aw, jeez. Dean looks at the screen. The three of âem, gorgeous in their own right, sitting hunched over in a rest stop with their broken down car the way Dean did too often as a kid. If it werenât for Sam, Dean wouldâve been Chi-Chi, he knows it, trailing around wide-eyed after anybody whoâd tell him something true. His hands itch with it, with the thought of being beautiful on his own terms. âYeah, okay,â he tells Sam. âIn general, I mean, nothinâ specific. I mean. Is it a tragedy?â
Sam shakes his head. âNo,â he says, grinning. Dean relaxes. âIt has a happy ending.â

Iâm getting shivers just thinking about it, and itâs been a few years already since I read it), ANYWAYS, thank you for bringing to my attention, in the middle of the coronavirus quarantine no less, the fact that the fandom legend orange_crushed has written a Bellarke fic, and it looks perfectly pain-inducing, thank you, T H A N K Y O U

also i would definitely talk about love and miracles if anyone wanted to, but it's also an old (and long!) fic and i've probably spent too long looking at it to know if it really holds up or not
Okay, so I've been watching BoJack Horseman on Netflix, and I feel compelled to ask if you have seen it? Not only is it shockingly good, with some Mad Men-level psychological realism, but also, one of the main characters is an anthropomorphic Golden Retriever. I think you would have strong Feelings about Mr. Peanutbutter.

Iâve had tremendous trouble getting into new shows, with a few exceptions. But your recommendation certainly speaks to its favor, and perhaps Iâll give it a try. Honestly, I still can't believe I'm 60k words into Can't Find the Light Alone, which makes it more than twice as long as anything else I've written. And I'm even happy with most of those words!
How about 2 and 12 for the movie asks? I'm really enjoying the Purgatory fic!

2. A movie you think is underrated
I think the fact that Jacques Demy's Donkey Skin is not regularly talked about as one of the all time great fairy tale films is criminal. Maybe the french speaking thing is a big barrier for some people. Or the incest. Idk.
12. A performance you think is underrated
I saw Trust recently and Adrienne Shelley genuinely moved me, such an incredible mix of strength and vulnerability. Julianne Moore in Safe is another favorite performance that I don't see talked about enough.

Hee hee, excellent! Iâm pretty sure I didnât come across it until 5+ years later, but thatâs typical for me :)Â I like the acoustic version better than the radio version, but thatâs also typical! This started out its life in my mental song catalogue as a Kara/Lee song, largely due to this really well-made Unfinished Business vid, and then when I found the acoustic version, it morphed into a Javert/Valjean song, largely due to this lovely fic where Javert plays guitar.
