Me walking up to a random person holding a suspiciously heavy and giant bag: hi have you heard of the good works of Drew Hayes.
Tori Rivas and Beverly in their Hallowville outfits! I’ve wanted to do full illustrations of them for so long and I finally got the motivation with my yearly re-read of the books. I’m gonna render these eventually and add Chloe at some point
VC book one-
Ivan: *explains to Tori that the Guild avoids pulling jobs in places where a superhero’s loved ones might get caught in the crossfire and piss off said superhero*
Tori: “Wait, how would you even know? Don’t superheroes have secret identities?”
Ivan: *trying not to laugh*
Book two-
Tori’s new neighbors-across-the-hall: *trying very hard to pretend that Austin hadn’t been holding that couch up by himself*
Kyle: *says a neighborly hello in exactly the same voice as when his superhero persona had super sped Tori out of the path of a flying car just this morning*
Tori: “…”
Tori: “Okay, I get it now.”
Toga Himiko is a girl with the cutest smile❤

Ivan: When I decide you're my daughter its all over bitches. (I'm formally adopting you)
the one kid who can lower his density in Villans’ Vignettes volume two was so frustrating to me for the first couple of chapters BECAUSE DREW HAYES ALSO WROTE VIOLET FROM SUPERPOWEREDS. And Violet kicks ass with density powers (yes, she has more range than him, but by book, like, two, she was a very competent flyer using the same part of her skill set that whiny kid has) (bro is whining about his power when his own bunkmate can’t even speak) (at least he got a talking to from sick ass blue mantis girl)
Fuck it, this is not meant to be perfect, gonna add actual thoughts in the edit so I can do it on my computer:
actual thoughts:
firstly i need to say, i was obsessed with super powereds when i was a kid, and pretty much grew up with fred the vampire accountant. i am so overwhelmingly happy that there's any author that i like enough to have stuck around in my life so long. that's all to say that i had not gone through villains code until this year, and i feel like i'm a kid again. i am probably, completely blinded by nostalgia, but drew hayes is an immensely under rated author and deserves as much attention as he can get.
on the actual book, i think this is genuinely the best hes done juggling this many characters, though admittedly some of the scenes can be a bit stuffed, though that might just be my adhds patience warring with me. also, having a proper female pov for the major plot is very refreshing, even more so that she is an actual character, a thing the author has never really struggled with in other books, but i think shines best this series and npcs, which i also have regrettably not finished beyond the first book, despite having quite a few dnd characters i might have.... stolen whole cloth from him.
ive finished all three of the main books, and, now that i have my hands on the vignettes ive decided to re-read them for a second time so i can get all the events in order. i would have waited until i had all of them to even touch the third book, but i couldnt resist once i got it.
