The Cocteau Twins' 4th studio album was released on 14 April 1986.
Victorialand was recorded without bassist Simon Raymonde (who was busy working on the This Mortal Coil album, Filigree & Shadow), so Elizabeth Fraser and Robin Guthrie recorded as a duo (with Guthrie providing all the instrumentation).
The album's title refers to a region of Antarctica and some of the songs' titles and lyrics are taken from books about the polar regions (as well as some non-English sources).
Victorialand peaked at #10 in the UK (their highest chart position to that time) but failed to chart in the US.
I do find clouds extremely relaxing. They carry me back to that one brief moment in time when, as a student, I uncharacteristically felt strangely chilled lying on my bed, listening to Victorialand by the Cocteau Twins and watching the clouds float by the window shortly before I was due to sit a vital examination.

Inspired by/based on Kinktober 2025 prompt lists by @josiebelladonna / @feverinfeveroutfic
Prompt(s):
Fire Land Day 27: Shibari
*sings to the tune of this* Iiiiiiiiiit's my birthday, my birthday is today!!!
And I have an IRL story for this prompt!!
Another long and rambly one; apologies in advance.
With a few pictures!!
People I will reference/talk about in these stories:
E: Primary boyfriend at the time this story took place, unfortunately no longer with him
C: At-the-time Boyfriend #2, currently my one remaining boyfriend; the primary focus of this story
This past March, I attended Dungeons and Geekdoms, a geeky kinky convention a couple states away. Small (I'd hazard about 500 people), the hotel all to ourselves, with dungeons for kinky times at night and various classes/panels/meetups throughout each day (in fact, the 2019 iteration was one of the first places I presented my hentai panel at).
Since C and I had done a scene last year (mentioned in 2024's Shibari post), and we hadn't had alone time in quite a while, we planned to do something again this year. We had decided on doing this on the Saturday morning of the con, since he was busy each night doing a bunch of scenes with friends and other girlfriends (Bob Ross body painting, wacky hijinks involving spanking, etc; things I briefly touched on in last year's Intimate Artistry post - sometimes I can't help but feel he's out of my league with how popular he tends to be at these things). We had also made the choice to do it in one of our hotel rooms, both for intimacy and so we wouldn't have to worry about dungeon space filling up.
Saturday morning came, and I walked down one floor from my hotel room to his. I knocked on the door, and he responded "Come in!"
This is (one of) the goober(s) I fell in love with, I thought.
Just as I was about to respond that the door was locked (because it was a hotel, duh), he said "Oh, right!" and let me in. I walk in, and celtic punk music is playing from a playlist on his phone. Not my style, but I can see the appeal.
Not ten seconds after I put my bags on a nearby chair, C practically pounced on me, grabbing me and kissing me all over. I told him in between kisses how much I missed him and our alone time. He responded in kind, along with some dirty talk as he scooped me up (he's 6 feet, I'm 5'1") and brought me over to the bed and during some initial rolling around; about how he'd been having dirty dreams about me every now and then ("I'll leave that to your imagination"), how his dick jumps when he sees me, how I'm so fucking sexy/hot, how he'd touch me/do more with me down there if I didn't get my period the day before.
Got our time off to a hot start, if I do say so myself. And the fact that it was C doing this just amplified it.
After he got me down to just my panties, he showed me the rope he had and we confirmed what we would do. A month or so prior, we decided on/discussed something similar to last year's encounter: him putting me in a rope harness and then touching me all over/using sensation things on me. This was also what we had planned to do a couple months prior at the party mentioned in this year's Lingerie post, but C had hurt his back and couldn't do anything that required too much effort. I had also suggested he take pictures and send them to me later so I could show them to E when I got home.
He brought out his rope: a deep purple and soft (cotton or hemp, I think; don't remember which for sure). He started by tying the rope around and down my chest, gliding/ghosting it and letting it fall every now and then, as well as tying my upper arms to my sides. I got up and knelt on the bed for a pic.
He then laid me back down on the bed and brought out more purple rope, this time in a lighter shade. He did some kind of tie on my right leg where my thigh touched my ankle (apparently it's called a futomomo?), and my knee was bent the whole time. My left leg remained straight and mobile.
After I was tied up, he used his hands, feathers, one of my soft floggers, and various other sensation/soft things to touch my (mostly upper) body all over, which felt amazing. Sensation play (and sensuality in general) is my main kink, along with lingerie.
I couldn't help but comment on the music every now and then (as well as breaking into chuckles when "Friggin in the Riggin" was all I remember hearing, finding it oddly appropriate), and we nerded out for a bit, especially when I recognized a cover of "Mamma Mia" playing by lyrics and a distinctive part. I told him that I'm admittedly not versed in celtic punk; Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys was pretty much the extent of my expertise. He educated me on it a bit. I couldn't help but infodump and try and find common ground when relevant ("Did you know that Dave King was in this band called Fastway?"). He also infodumped about the various types of rope he used and that exist in the kink world. He apologized, but I said it was fine and kinda fascinating. He then went back to work.
A little while later, the music suddenly stopped and I noticed C doing something on his phone. Just as I was about to ask what he was doing and if everything was okay, I heard familiar sounds of thunder, a woman screaming, and notes from a church organ.
"Resurrection by Erection", by Powerwolf.
"I've been into this band since 2012, and I still can't get over this song," I said as I tried to hold back chuckles. He had pulled up a Powerwolf playlist on Spotify. Made me happy, as I knew he knew about my Powerwolf hyperfixation that had been growing over the past year and change.
A lot of the scene after that was us continuing to nerd out about music, me infodumping/pointing out various songs/telling C about how E and I went to see them in September 2024, things like that. Some general bits I remember/comments I made (not necessarily in order, though I tried to put them in some type of order when/where I could):
"Resurrection by Erection" - I told C the story of when I first showed E this song, summed up by this meme I made back then:
"Sanctified with Dynamite" - I reflexively sang/pointed out the pre-chorus audience participation bit (along with those in other songs). At one point, C's app glitched out and he had to restart the playlist (also somehow Turisas's cover of "Rasputin" snuck in there?). When this song came back around, he sang that bit as he lightly flogged me with a lei (which he'd used throughout our scene) and/or a soft flogger/leftover rope, along with making the typical "you got lei'd" joke at one point. Couldn't help but smile.
"Incense and Iron" - reflexively sang the audience participation parts ("Stand up as force"/"...as horde"). C seemed to really dig this one, "Blood for Blood", and "Sainted by the Storm". That tracks.
"Amen and Attack" - reflexively sang the "Eins, Zwei, Amen and Attack" bit.
"Demons Are a Girl's Best Friend" - I pointed out this and "We Drink Your Blood" as the songs I often use nowadays to start people on Powerwolf, as well as probably their most well-known and those that do a pretty good job of summing up their vibe.
"Venom of Venus" - "Ooh nice! This one's like, top 10 in their catalogue for me."
"Army of the Night" - I commented on how if I was a better singer, I'd sing this at karaoke. Led to a tangent about how while I thought Attila Dorn wasn't quite up there with people like Dio, Halford, and Bruce Dickinson ("Cliche choices, I know", I'd said), but he still remains one of my favorites and grew on me over the years. C understood my choices, and at one point described Dio's voice as a mix of a croon and a scream, and my mind was blown at how perfect that description was. Led to me talking about how singing Dio songs at karaoke had so far been a mixed bag.
"Armata Strigoi" - I told C how I had sang this one at karaoke, and it was pretty fun, even though only 2 people seemed to know the song.
"1589" - We remembered the time I had first shown C this song/video. C is part of the local branch of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism: they do medieval/historical reenactment/activities). C fences sometimes and does bardic performance as part of this, so I'd figured he'd be interested. He was, and he was briefly inspired by the song to write his own song about the Werewolf of Bedburg. I remember laughing when he said it would use the same chord progression as "Werewolves of London". He since abandoned the project because he didn't feel too good about the result.
After a while, it started to get close to lunchtime, and C wanted to leave enough time for aftercare and necessary cleanup before lunch and another scene he had scheduled in a couple hours. It worked out, because it was at that point that I realized I needed to straighten my leg or it would be painful.
Powerwolf continued to play as C untied me and into our aftercare, which, if you know me, is pretty much cuddling and more nerd talk. We got onto talking about Led Zeppelin/Robert Plant somehow? Forgot which song led to that tangent. We also got a bit emotional and feelsy. Stuff about our relationship, feelings, how much I appreciated having C and E in my life, things like that.
After some time, he packed up as I laid down for a bit, then got dressed, though not before he took a couple pictures of some of the marks the rope left behind.
"Die, Die, Crucify" - one of the first Powerwolf songs I'd heard from them back in the day
"Dancing with the Dead" - was about to regale C of the audience participation/bit between Attila and Falk, but it was unfortunately time to leave.
We hugged and kissed, then I left the room, happy, and went to get lunch. I had definitely needed that scene, especially with my period messing with my brain and the usual work BS. I love that he and I can just nerd out and infodump about music, which is how we connected in general several years ago at a munch, and the fact that it doesn't impede our scenes/alone time makes that even better, and honestly sexier.
