Just found out that even if you have third-party searches disabled on your tumblr account, ppl can still find it on Google bc of AI overview.
Archive of Our Own used to be one of my safe, happy places. It had major problems, Iām not going to start pretending it didnāt and there werenāt issues with racism and bullying chasing people out, but it was still one of the reliable places I could go to find joy in my own nerdy, niche corners of fandom.
And it is rapidly, RAPIDLY losing even that bright side.
Everything is becoming AI slop.
Older works are disappearing and writers are choosing not to post new writing to avoid it getting stolen and used by AI companies. Itās not a flood of them doing it (yet⦠that Iām aware of) but itās noticeable.
AO3ās dogmatic insistence that LLM/āAIā works must be allowed for āmaximum inclusionā is not a principled stanceāit is a cowardly stance that refuses to confront reality and calls itself neutral, and itās fucking ruining what good is still on the site.
Itās like the porn bots flooding tumblr all over again, except AO3 isnāt even trying to do anything, misguided or not.
yup, same here. i opened my account there in 2019 and i pretty much watched the site backslide into the proverbial landfill beginning from last year with the constant crashes every two days. i started seeing ai-generated fics more and more at the beginning of this year: the prose thatās a bit too good (doubly if the author made it known that english isnāt so good and quite awkward), overly descriptive passages that donāt really say anything, you have to read it like 15 times before you realize āholy shit, this has no point or story, porn without plot notwithstandingā. i would definitely call it a flood at this point because even though there is a tag on there for ai fics, people are lazy. itās so easy to get paranoid at this point.
i literally decided to not post anymore because of the looming threat of my work being scraped (again), plusāi donāt know if youāve noticed this, but have you noticed how belligerent pro-ai people are? i stumbled on a pro just now and this guy has made basically bullying antis and calling them names his bread and butter (while claiming that antis are dumb for doing just that, oh, the irony). thatās just one example, too, iāve been seeing it more and more lately. fandom had already been growing toxic: just that alone is enough to make me want to jump ship, though i havenāt ruled out whether or not iāll 86 my account.
i do see the logic, though: when you ban one thing, it makes for a slippery slope. that doesnāt mean itās okay, though, so i do agree with you, op. itās totally unprincipled on their part because of aiās raison dāĆŖtre and the ones who defend it. iāve been workshopping this theory for a while now, that the constant crashes the site was experiencing last year were from bots hogging the bandwidth and from mass swaths of ai-generated fics being uploaded to the site. just a theory, but itās also any explanation for why the one place on the internet that seems to be any kind of haven anymore has gone completely to shit in just the last year alone.

With Rose (the author of Zero Cycle) announcing that she is taking down her fics and stepping away from the internet I think it's important to remind everyone about fandom etiquette.
This situation is not exclusive to rpf. I have watched this happen in pretty much every single major fandom. Klance Byler Mcyt, ect, they have all had a fic go extremely viral which then results in a downward spiral where fandom etiquette is thrown out the window and the author inevitably ends up pulling their fic from the internet and stepping away all together.
To be honest with you I am not surprised that this has happened again. I have been noticing for a while that the way people have been treating Rose and her fics has been absolutely terrible. Even people who were well meaning let their excitement about her fics cloud their judgement and cause them to be quite rude to her and disrespectful of fandom and rpf etiquette.
Therefore I would like to give some reminders to everyone about fandom etiquette. Because it's not just "keep all rpf discussion to ao3 and tumblr." those are important and those rules being broken certainly played a role in this particular scenario, but there's a lot more to it then that and as a fan you need to be more aware of how you interact with content.
Authors are not celebrities. They did not sign up for having an audience to deliver things to. They are fellow fans and creatives who are passionate about what they do. Because of this, I urge you, no matter how good a fic is, no matter how much you love it, you cannot treat it like a grand monolith for the fandom. When that happens the fic gets pulled out of its intended context and the author will inevitably be put under extreme strain and scrutiny. If you love a fic the best thing you can do for it is keep your interactions with and discussion of it purely to the ao3 comments and the authors askbox. I understand that creating a separate fandom for someone's works is done out of love and admiration but I have never ever seen it end well. When you create a fandom for a fic you are inviting typical fandom problems in and pushing them onto an author who did not ask for this.
You also need to stop treating authors like they are gods or something. I know this is usually done with the intentions of being complimentary. But an author is a real human being who deserves compassion and kindness. When you treat them like something to be worshipped you are inevitably dehumanizing them and making people feel more comfortable saying horrific shit to them or just generally being disrespectful. While it is also bad to get too parasocial and act like an author is your close personal friend, going towards the other extreme is also harmful. It is also just uncomfortable in general to have people act like you are not just a normal average person existing in the world. Authors are amazingly talented of course and that should be appreciated, but that does not rank above the fact that they are a normal person who would just like to interact online like anyone else.
The most important thing to remember is respect above all else. Because authors are human beings who deserve it. Being talented at something should not exclude them from that right. I ask that you take the time to reflect on the way you talk to/about authors and double check that you aren't accidentally forgetting about that.
Also last reminder for this particular situation. Do not complain about Rose taking down her fics. She does not owe you anything. You do not get to be upset that someone who has had their boundaries crossed over and over again and has been repeatedly disrespected has taken steps that are in her best interest. You are not the victim in this situation, do not act like it.
I think we all know that the real reason Wattpad is banning smut is because payment processors and other such puritans hate it and want to ban it, and this is part of that broader trend... But what bullshit reason is Wattpad bullshitting us with, anyway?
We must protect the children? Porn is bad for adults? Liking icky porn makes you a bad person?
And there it is, all of the above!
Writing or reading anything that exists for the purpose of being horny is "dangerous, irresponsible, and bad for the community"!!
And you'll notice that they don't really care if it's "married sex in the missionary position for the purpose of having children" or "ridiculous shit that could never exist in real life at all" - if you want to read something explicit, purely for sexy purposes, we are all degenerate perverts in the eyes of the censors.
Sex = bad, horny = worthless, porn = dangerous
It's this shit again. It's happened before, and it's happening again, and it will keep happening. Any puritans running the websites or payment processors WILL censor you. A for-profit company will ALWAYS stab you in the back.
Plan accordingly. Here's the advice I endorse.
iām starting to see some āessaysā in the ai tag on here that feel veryā¦
i want to say āintrusiveā. thereās one in particular that caught my attention and the best way i can describe it is it almost feels as though the account that generated it did so in the wake of my reaction to cara being scraped as well as my being anti-ai, and the reason why i use myself is because itās oddly specific.
āshe thinks sheās so wise and cleverā when the fuck did i claim this? iāve been called an old soul by other people but i never said this about myself.
āshe claims to remember the internet before the algorithmsā ā¦thatās because i do, especially when right before that line, it mentions some nebulous āgirlā in her 20s and early 30s. you know, in the mid-2000s, iād go onto google, way before the ai overviews and the ai-generated websites, and look for books and music or iād go onto sites like encyclopedia britannica and read. i remember doing typing classes when i was in the 2nd grade, way back in 2000, and again in 6th grade.
āthe internet has always been a messā or⦠something like that, iām paraphrasing. this reminds me of the condescending, false philosophizing that my dad does all the time and from when i would see whenever i would give my opinion or my feelings about something on those old formula 1 message boards back in 2012. āitās always been like thisā, yeah, and your stiff ass just blindly accepts it as fact that thatās what itāll always be.
āshe calls ai āa diseaseāā iāve used āai is a plagueā on posts, but only because itās an established tag here. duh. and frankly, at this point, itās very much a plague. itās very much a plague like how covid is a plague like how stupidity and willful ignorance and āblind leading the blindā are all plagues.
āshe dreams of a post-ai internetā complete with the insinuation that i must use something ai behind closed doors. annnnnnd this is where you have failed to get to know me. thereās this whole new thing where it seems as though ai seems to be capturing what you think and feel on an unconscious level now (where it seems like that, anyway), but iām watching it completely hallucinate right before my eyes.
i remember this theme in ādonāt look upā, too, when the billionaire tech bro company owner makes the bold claim that leo dicaprioās character will ādie aloneā and [spoiler] he doesnāt. it thinks it knows you better than you, but if thereās anything that being around alex (and chuck and eric, and a further extent, joey and also chris) has taught me, itās that you canāt sum up a manās (or in my case, a womanās) life with a single sentence and a think piece vomited up by ai, or recommendations by an algorithm on steroids, or by a family that only sees what you let them see and doesnāt ask anything else about you.
you donāt know me. and youāll never know me, either.
also, can someone please tell me why the fuck i just heard black velvet by alannah myles on an iphone commercial, and a (pretty crappy) cover of glamorous by fergie on an android commercial.
the reason there is no change is bc everyone is selfish and scared. in order for revolution, in order for a better world, there needs to be courage, selflessness and SUCH a passion for moral righteousness that your life means nothing if it doesnt cause change. we need to be dying for each other
it quite literally starts with putting the phone down. get offline and distance yourself from your phone more: youāll think more clearly. i promise.
though i was hearing āi donāt know youā with the subtext of āwhy should i help you?ā as early as 2011 whenever i needed anything so iām not getting my hopes up.
iām willing to give someone a $20 bill for gas, put in spare change in those little plastic boxes at the cash register at the market, and help a kid find his 1-year-old baby sister (true story), itās so easy to me, why canāt you fuckers do that?
This is so sad. I'm on Cara btw, just haven't been doing any art lately. It's kind of like what Instagram used to be back when you still got real interactions from people. Worst thing about it is it takes like 5 minutes to log in, and sometimes I get distracted and don't make it.
āin the end, everyone benefitsā ho boy, say that to anyone in places like georgia or florida, whoāve literally been getting evicted from their houses to make way for data centers as of late. so many of those people have lived in said houses for generations, too.
but yeah, you know. it benefits everyone. the loss of history and livelihood benefits everyone.
jesus fucking christ, are these motherfuckers for real

There's a certain disappointment that comes when teachers request we use AI to do assignments. Like, no, I know AI is useful and all but I am not giving it a word of my essay, however terrible it is, okay? I have seen people lose their livelihood over that thing, and as a writer I cannot condone this. Oh, AI was created to improve things but that is not how it's used, is it? Technically it's good but nobody has ethics anymore so technically-
Redownloaded instagram for the first time in 5 years and holy shit it's gotten so bad.
poked my head in after a month away and itās even worse on desktop: everything barely works at all and iām not going anywhere near the explore page.
the place is practically a tiktok clone now. videos every which way, most of them ai, and w h a t t h e h e l l is with that new logo now. instead of listening to the userbase (sounds like tumblr, oh how the overlords persist), they make a huge fuss about whether or not the logo looks āup to dateā, when it looked perfectly fine to me.
i donāt feel good being on there, either (you know. meta owning the place and every time you do anything, it activates their data centers, which release recycled potable water into the environment at temperatures ripe for things like cyclospora and everything). my artās been getting a lot more risquĆ© as of late and i donāt hecking trust the ai thatās infiltrated the place. not to mention, ai āartā is getting all the guts and glory while a traditional artist like myself is getting tumbleweeds. notifications donāt work anymore, either.
itās also kind of painful for me because i have to be exposed to the thought of my crush being with someone else (and someone i not only donāt like, but someone i find incredibly repulsive and wonder what the absolute literal fuck he was thinking getting together with her). even though i made myself clear about my feelings for himāand iām 98% sure the feelings are mutual, because for the last five years iāve caught him mirroring me, stalking my story, talking about me with his friends, interacting with me at weird times of the day, talking to me on his livestreams with this sweet little twinkle in his eye and his voice nearly at a whisper, and even getting into things that iām intoāthe wound is still fairly raw. i love him madly (like the doors song, āyou gotta love āer madlyā), and there really is nothing i want more than for him to be happy, but every so often iāll think about it, and the nausea that sweeps over me. the nausea followed by the anger and the desire for vengeance. i get that iām fiery and rugged and brash but under this rugged āhood ratā exterior is a soft person and a brain. heās the alien to my ufo so i canāt help but wonder how, or even why, heās with someone who is so dense, whose beliefs are so rudimentary and surface-level, who utterly reeks of pretentiousness and a false phony faƧade, and who i believe is so bloody careless and inept and egotistical and controlling that it will be lethal for him, and it has completely done a number on his confidence. iām not saying iād be a good match (even though i daydream about it constantly), but i have often wondered if itās because heās afraid of being alone and feeling āunlovableā when he is perfectly lovable as he is. he is so lovable that itās almost comical. (in fact, you know what, iāll go out on a limb and say heās almost too lovable).
sorry, I got kind of jane austen there, but itās only because this is something that has been on my mind for some time, and instagram has only made it worse.
Honestly one of the saddest parts about this whole AI thing is watching some of the smartest and most talented people I know turn into shells of themselves from using AI.
One of the most resourceful and intelligent people I knew has become near addicted to ChatGPT and relies on it for nearly everything.
The person who taught me photography and gifted me my first camera is now using AI to generate images.
One of the most resilient people I know, who packed up as a teenager and immigrated to another country with zero support and got their degree barely knowing any English is now using AI chatbots to make decisions for them.
These people who I looked up to my entire life are basically nothing more than shells of themselves, and itās all because of AI.
can confirm this, too.
after getting sober 12 years ago, my father grew very vocal and opinionated and more āhimselfā (though it was a double-edged sword, and i wonāt get into that), and then the ai came and he can barely say more than two sentences from his own mind on his facebook posts now.
my brother, a chemical engineer, honestly canāt tell you if something is ai or notāplus, iām under the impression that his job utilizes a crap-ton of ai, like every job in existence right now.
before i bailed from there again last month, i started seeing a fair number of baking and science accounts on instagram absolutely praising ai for āstreamliningā everything, and i started seeing actual art accounts praising it and utilizing it as well.
iāve often felt like i was surrounded by idiots (the plight of being a smart person), and by emotionless people, but i never thought it would hit this level, though.
Nowadays the biggest relief is scrolling to a music artistās page and seeing that they have music from pre 2023
listen to me. we are investing money in ai, but the underlying currency is cognitive ability. in 10-20 years, weāll have realised and pay more money for ai in order to buy our brains back.
sound mysterious? or familiar? it's happening with smartphones rn. i'm gen z and never knew the world without internet or (smart)phones. now that our prefrontal cortices are almost done developing, it seems more and more young people are fed up with the internet. apart from brain-fried junior tech bros (sorry, i'm biased), "generation iphone" pines for offline holidays and analogue journaling. instagram is full of content decrying instagram. & the reason we can't quit is that phones were sold to us as the easiest solution for everything. have your wallet on your phone! have your mail on your phone! your train tickets! your banking! your id! your friends! your hobbies! your job! your controls for your window blinds! how easy! smart! modern!
now that our entire lives are on our phone, DiGiTaL NaTiVeS are fcking sick of phones. and it's impossible to quit because modern life is basically impossible without a smartphone. additionally, the market has swooped in and monetised our attention span beyond the original intentions. cue the explosion of short-form content designed to keep us scrolling eternally. our attention is the currency, and now that that's been utterly fried perfected, the market is moving on: to selling us our attention span back. app blockers, flip phones, digital detox retreats. first we paid to be distracted, which was sold to us as innovation, and now we're paying to get a shred of our abilities back. also sold as ...innovation, somehow. either way, we're paying.
in 10-20 years, everything will be ai-ified. and weāll feel the repercussions. ai-generated websites everywhere and ai summaries and every app with an unavoidable ai "helper". we wonāt be able to synthesise information anymore because weāre not required to sit our butt down and tease out details ourselves. weāll be so used to being served āthis articleās mains points summarised for youā that weāll complain it's "tOo hArD". and then, the market will move on. i swear with my hand on a holy bible (and i am catholic) there will be some pay-per-device ai designed to filter/block other ai. purchase a license, and it'll block all the in-app ai, the summaries, the ai websites. you will pay money to think again, after you paid money to never think again. it will happen according to the patterns we see now when trying to detach our life from smartphones. and as it was with smartphones, the only people insisting the ai infiltration of daily life is both inevitable and needed are the people trying to sell it to you.
get smart now, fellows. i'm begging you. do not upload your lecture notes to chatgpt, or any ai app your favourite study influencer with a cute desk setup is trying to sell you a discount code for because it can give you great summaries to study with! :) how quick! how easy! how modern! do not fall into the same trap again. do not sell the essence of your brain for relief of the minor inconveniences of life. there will always be minor inconveniences. more will be found according to whatever could make money. but it will be hard to get back the parts of yourself you sold. like with any trap, you'll get the honey and the hit to your neck.
besides, minor inconveniences actually build neurons. doing stuff analog builds neurons: yesterday, i spent the day handwriting an entire chapter of a fanfic. i usually do it in spurts because i have several wips and iām also an artist and a polymath, so i made a mental note to sit down and write a whole chapter by hand. and let me tell you: it was wonderful. it reminded me of when i was a kid and iād write stories longhand, and i could feel my brain strengthening, too.
iāve never been one to doomscroll or hang around on websites for very long, but whenever i read from a physical book, or do something by hand, it feels like a detox. i still have a physical wallet (mainly because itās a good durable wallet, iāve had it nearly 15 years and it doesnāt have any wear on it), and i wonāt explain it, mainly because i donāt really want to, i want to leave people guessing, but⦠somehow, by some dark magic, i have actually sincerely managed to get away with not having a smartphone this whole time. i had a ādumb phoneā for a while until it died, and the place i used to live in still had a landline, and the phone i have now is my momās phone and she and i barely use it (and when we do, itās for its original purpose: to make phone calls).
i was born in the 90s so i remember life before the internet took off. i remember when the iphone was released and when more and more entities were adamantly insisting for us to go digital. i also remember hearing that electronics are vulnerable to electromagnetic interference, i.e., direct bursts from the sun. i was doing some research last night about gamma ray bursts from stars just to make sure the thought iāve had in the back of my mind since i was about 14 wasnāt incorrect, and itās not unheard of with the sun, even though they happen more with larger stars: our sun still shoots out plumes and waves of radiation, especially if the vast amounts of aurorae weāve been experiencing are anything to go by. i donāt have any idea whatās happening with the sun right now as it seems like every single day weāre seeing aurorae happening and in the most unusual places like colorado (tbh, i donāt think anyone does: if thereās one thing being a science nerd has done for me, itās that itās kept me from putting on a tinfoil hat, iām too much of a skeptic š ) but this alone should be enough to convince you to not rely on electronics. it definitely has me, my own background notwithstanding.
iām fully of the belief that ai is going to reach the point you said, op, where weāre going to be paying for an ai something to help us block the aiāand imo, i see it happening in less time. iāll give it a year, actually, maybe, given how quickly itās all advancing. and iām sure our sun will have something to say about that, too. so, i second this: get smart now while you still can. strengthen those neurons and those synapses.

Basically, if you ever follow space exploration, ocean exploration, genetics, AI research, or any such topics, the thing you will find everywhere is people thinking it's something humans shouldn't do because of some vague defined sacredness, or they're putting their hands over their ears and going nananana it's not real.
Really, really strange.
i see this a lot in the biology and chemistry fields, too, especially of the āappliedā types like neuroscience, molecular biology, and biochemistry. thereās this pervasive belief that you shouldnāt be looking at the behavior of neurons or that itās some kind of witchcraft happening or (my favorite) thereās no such thing as things like molecules.
in fact, you want to know how baked in this is? i have this really distinct memory of taking biology class in 7th grade and right before we were to start the unit on evolution, our teacher actually had us take home a permission slip saying that itās okay to study this, and again when we started doing dissections. my mom happily signed both (and the latter i understand completely), but itās always made me trip balls just thinking about how there are actually people out there who donāt believe in darwinās findings, or that we shouldnāt be studying any of them. i also remember being a little kid into paleontology, reading about and being fascinated with creatures that are millions of years old, and my bible-thumper grandmother wondering why i so āblindly accepted the idea of people finding fossils somewhere when for all (i) knew, they couldāve been planted thereā.
(frankly, my issue with ai research is itās basically frankensteinās monster at this point, how itās being abused to the worst extent possible and to the detriment of everything. and the culture surrounding it (shoving it down our throats at every whim when no one consented to it, using it to scrape websites for content) is akin to rape culture.)
dogmatic fundamentalism is the dearth of humanity.
happy birthday chuck š„³šš„āļø
