Nel dipinto 🖼️ sono presenti molte figure ma a dominare la scena sono Giulio Cesare e Vercingetorige.

Cesare è seduto sul suo seggio, indossa corona di alloro dorata e, sopra l'armatura, una magnifica veste purpurea (il paludamento).

La sua postura è rigida e severa: Il braccio destro poggiato sul bracciolo e la mano sinistra premuta sulla gamba.

Vercingetorige è ritratto come un uomo di elevata statura, con lunghi baffi e capelli.

Fiero e impettito, è ancora in sella a un cavallo bianco magnificamente bardato.

Attorno a loro altre figure mostrano reazioni di stupore, sdegno e impazienza, mentre sullo sfondo si vedono le fortificazioni romane costruite attorno ad Alesia.

Gli storici antichi raccontano così l'evento:

- Cesare (La guerra gallica 7, 89, 4): si limita a dire che Vercingetorige fu consegnato dopo la battaglia di Alesia;

- Plutarco (Vita di Cesare, 27, 9, 10): lo scrittore greco afferma che Vercingetorige si recò da Cesare a cavallo 🐎, girò attorno a Cesare, rinunciò alle armi e ammise la sconfitta;

- Cassio Dione (Storia romana 40, 41, 1-3): Dione dice che Vercingetorige, dopo la disfatta, si presentò all'improvviso da Cesare, suscitano sconcerto per la sua imponenza fisica, e chiuse clemenza; ma Cesare gli rinfacciò il tradimento e rifiutò il perdono.

Floro (Storia romana 1, 45, 26): dice che Vercingetorige si recò da Cesare a cavallo e ammise la sconfitta. (in pratica come Plutarco)

Dunque, Royer si ispirò soprattutto a Plutarco e Floro ma l'atteggiamento severo di Cesare può venire da Cassio Dione 📜 🏛️ 📚 🎨
