but cool going back and watching that again confirms my thought of "I don't think I had the words or if I did, I didn't dare speak them" and that I knew. I knew but didn't dare but once I did dare, at least I controlled their stare. And now here is a ramble adjacent to what I had been writing before:

They stared regardless, but once I dared, once I "let him in", I finally let them see the true me. Me. Before they stared because I wasn't quite what they wanted, after they stared because I embraced everything they hated about me. They saw me as a freak regardless, I might as well be in control and show my true self. I became the wind under my own wings and I had my one glorious moment of breathing and seeing before having to hide again. I was seen as myself and they couldn't look away or deny it. I think I hid them in plain sight too. A little ironic, I think, but my display saved them a few moments. I let him in but I think the captain would say so did they. I let them experience what they needed, a glorious few moments but theirs was something to avoid the view and that's ok.
