YueLi was adopted into the gang not too long after Dutch and Hosea saved John from being hanged. Pretty immediately there was a sibling rivalry between the two, not only due to how soon Yue joined up but they are also pretty close in age. They both felt a deep need to prove themselves to their new family (John trying to show that he could be like Arthur and Yue wanting to make sure they didn’t regret taking her in). Yue also fought to prove that, as a girl, she could do anything that the boys could. They fought constantly.

As they got older (and after John came back from his year-long hiatus), Yue and John softened towards each other just a touch. There was so much more to worry about as adults that their rivalry died out. Yue forgave John for leaving much quicker than Arthur did, and I think it’s because she realized how much she had missed him and could empathize with him more. They can sit together in silence and understanding and even share soft moments like this one.
