The Coasters - “16 Greatest Hits” (Trip cat. TOP 16 - 7) & The Coasters - “16 Greatest Hits” (Movie Play cat. 9157) In the movie Death Proof, during the bar scene where “Stuntman Mike,” played by Kurt Russell, is treated to a lap dance by “Arlene” played by Vanessa Ferlito, the song she puts on the jukebox is one of the Coasters’ best, “Down In Mexico.” The seen is amazing but the song is not the version familiar to fans of the Coasters. The Coasters formed in 1955 and to the best of my knowledge there was only one version of the song which they released as their first 7-inch. Despite listening to EVERY version and label variation of the song I came across since the 2007 release of the movie, I never once found any variation from the original release. Recently, I searched and read everything I could about the music in Quentin Tarantino movies. There are many stories surrounding the music in Death Proof including ones that read like conspiracy theory. One forum mentioned that there was a “greatest hits,” record that was actually an LP of re-recorded hits released in 1974. This made sense since around 1967 they began changing their sound from R&B and Soul to Funk. In 1973 they recorded the LP “On Broadway,” which is possibly when they also recorded these songs (still looking into that). But, with a little help of pitch control, these LPs contain the song from the movie and it is awesome to be able to play it out.
