First real meal in Seoul (bibimguksu ëčëčê”ì, sorry ugly pic but I was hungry af) & some snapchat quality selfies. The subway journey from airport to my hostel was not very pleasant but I survivedâïžI found another finnish exchange student from the airport so luckily I didnât have to go alone all the way to Seoul~
Oh btw, itâs really rainy and humid here⊠bless the airconđ And tomorrow Iâm moving to the sharehouse!
***
Ilmastointi on pelastus. Huomenna muutto sinne solukÀmppÀÀn!
D-day
(roll down for English ver)
Plus nĂ€in vĂ€ltyn myös miljoonilta âmitĂ€ kuuluu?â -viesteiltĂ€. Ei sillĂ€ etteikö olisi kiva, ettĂ€ kaverit kyselee, mutta Koreassa on kuitenkin eri kaveripiirit ja yhteydenpitovĂ€lineet, enkĂ€ viitsisi kaikkea aikaani kuluttaa Suomeen pĂ€in viestimĂ€llĂ€. Sori.
Onneksi ainakin yksi huonekaveri on korealainen, joten pÀÀsee sitten puhumaan koreaa myös kotona. Eniten tÀllÀ hetkellÀ ehkÀ jÀnskÀttÀÀ opiskelut Koreassa, koska kyseessÀ on paikallinen yksityinen huippuyliopisto, eli n. 5% parhain arvosanoin lukiosta valmistuneista hakijoista pÀÀsee sisÀÀn⊠ja sitten siellÀ olen minÀ, suomalainen muumi.
And same briefly in English:
Hello, Iâm Oona and I am going to be an exchange student in Korea University for one year. Iâm moving to Korea today, yay! I made this blog mainly for my friends and family in Finland, but since Iâm planning to post a lot of pics and small entries I thought I would write this also in English for my intâl readers!
I have been an exchange student in Korea when I was in high school (in 2013) so itâs not a new country to me. I can speak korean quite fluently (I did TOPIK in spring 2016 and got level 3) and Iâm really really happy and excited to go back there again! And I love korean food.
This time Iâm going to live in a share house in Seoul with 8 other people, mostly international students. But Iâve also got some korean roommates (and that means I can practise my korean at home too!)
In Finland I study Environmental Science, but Iâm going to study politics and philosophy related stuff during my exchange in KU. Iâll also register to some korean language course but for that I need to take a test or something when I go there.
Bye for now, next time Iâll write from Korea!
The Metaphorical Travelling Cow and the Post-Exchange Blues
Itâs all over now, baby blue, 2017 edition. Or well, at least my semester abroad is. So, what the year 2017, my time at the National University of Singapore, and the following 8 weeks brought me:
11 countries: Finland, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Norway, Spain.
It's been A BIT fast-paced (our time in SE Asia was limited, after all). This kind of McTravel makes you realize how good and fast you are at adapting, but makes you somewhat feel like a teflon pan where nothing sticks. I am the cow and the experiences are the grass, and I need time to GRAZE. I need the time to fully understand whatâs happening, and think about how I feel about it, and what it all means. And I donât think a good blog post can be made without realizing those (this, too, is the Year of Realizing Things), so here we go. Why this post is so frickin late.
So, letâs have 1 picture per each country in this post. (EDIT: EXCEPT FOR INDONESIA......which I forgot..... But I posted about Indonesia before so whatever) This will be a brief summary, after all, the one where I try to comprehend all the things Iâve seen and what it all meant â and fail spectacularly at it, of course.
Singapore (on my very last day).
All the ways I got there and back again, like the little hobbit I am:
22 flights*
7 bus rides (everywhere, but the craziest were Myanmarâs 9-hour overnight buses)
2 train rides (including a 13-hour overnight train in Vietnam)
3 boat rides (from Hong Kong to Macau, after 2 hours of sleep because of a crazy night in Lan Kwai Fong)
2 rental cars for two days (with friends: Langkawi, Malaysia; by myself: TromsĂž, Norway)
1 rental e-bike for half a day (Bagan, Myanmar)
1 motorbike ride (Hoi An, Vietnam, 2 people on the back of a scooter)
countless tuk-tuks (Thailand)
1 jetski romp (Langkawi, Malaysia)
Hong Kong.
And to be honest, all grazing done and done, I still donât know what to say. People ask me how it all was, and I donât know where to begin. It was really something else. And, in Finnish: oli kivaa (âit was niceâ, in a very laconic way). Nice, yee.Â
Macau. After realizing that you really shouldnât take photos at a casino.
What is there to tell? Do you start with the basics â what we did and what we saw, and general outlines, or the best: the stories to fill the outlines? The quirky things?Â
Bangkok, Thailand.
And no one really gets it, and all your stories feel unfinished. **) What the hell is there to say? Your friends from home werenât there, and you donât want to talk about it too much with them. Itâs insensitive and rude: look at all the things I did and fun I had without you!. (But this never mitigated your missing them. These things coexisted.)
Yangon, Myanmar.
And you find it hard to talk about with your ex-exchange buddies, because all the various (I am talking DOZENS) group chats you shared start dying out, and you realize that they, too, lead their own lives back home, and you donât know anything about it, and worst of all: donât belong.
 Hoi An, Vietnam.
After coming home and crying on the plane, not because I was particularly sad or regretful or happy, but merely because everything was a bit too MUCH, everyone told me to stay still for a while. To let things sink in. I stayed home for a week and then went to Norway for 7 days. First, to see a friend and experience the Constitution Day celebrations in Oslo, and then all by myself to TromsĂž.
Langkawi, Malaysia.
It was kind of stupid, people!! On 9 May, I was in Singapore, one degree above the Equator. On 19 May, I was about 3 degrees above the Arctic Circle. I donât even know what my body thought of it. My mind loved it. I canât believe these places exist on the same planet, it screamed. How lucky are you to see them all, you ass!!
TromsĂž, Norway.
Wait, I do know what my body thought of it. It got messed up as hell. I GOT FAT...with memories. But also actually fat. So. Being home has felt good. For now. (But then I also managed to spend a week before midsummer in Barcelona, Spain. Oops.)
Sitges, Spain.
So, after all that, I came home.
Kumpula, Helsinki, Finland, May 2017.
Here I am, indeed.
*) This number is absolutely DISGUSTING. I feel like I have single-handedly fucked up the climate; never mind Trump getting out of the Paris agreement, THIS IS IT, THE SINGLE WORST THING YOU CAN DO.
**) At this point, you should notice that this post is going nowhere
Finnish translation: Olen vaipunut tavanomaiseen vetelyyteen. YritÀn jÀsentÀÀ jÀrjestÀÀn jÀsennystÀ uhmaavia tunteita ja kokemuksia, joita vaihto-nelikuukautinen toi tullessaan. Hankalalta vaikuttaa. Kaikki tiivistyy kliseisiin: parasta, mitÀ saatoin tehdÀ. Tulin, nÀin, voitin. Kaikenlaista kummaa tapahtuu comfort zonen ulkopuolella, mutta on myös ihan ok palata sinne nysvÀÀmÀÀn. Paitsi ettÀ taskussa on jo liput Pohjois-Italiaan ja Ranskan Rivieralle...
A Swede, a Dane and a Finn walk into a lecture hall, part 3
(One of my professors is from Sweden. In that class, I tend to sit with a Danish girl, and this certainly has caught his attention. Part 1. Part 2.) Prof: This semester has been a nightmare. First, I had those technical difficulties, all those endless discussions Iâve had with IVLE and ExamSoft people â I practically have not slept in 2 months, (gestures to us) there's a Dane in the lecture hall, a Finn!!, it has been just crazy around here

Trendi on laskeva.
Palasin toissapÀivÀnÀ Hong Kongista, ylihuomenna on vuorossa Malesian Langkawi. Tulilla: Myanmar, Thaimaa ja Vietnam. (Ainiin, ja viikko Suomeen palaamiseni jÀlkeen tÀytyykin sitÀ piipahtaa Oslossa ja Tromssassa...)
Semmosta.
** Klubilla soi Flo Rida - Low. âTÀÀ soi baareissa kun tĂ€ytin 18!!!â intoudun. âMĂ€ olin sillon 13â, sanoo paras vaihtarikaverisi. Tunnet vuosien painon hartioillasi.Â
*** Totta puhuen kampuksen ilmapiiri on tarttuvaa: kello on 21:44 asuntolan ruokalassa, olen juuri syönyt iltapalat ja nyt tyytyvĂ€isenĂ€ vielĂ€ mietin ettĂ€ ihanaa, ainakin 4 tuntia hyvÀÀ opiskeluaikaa edessĂ€.Â
English translation: I visited the Embassy of Finland and a Marimekko shop today, so Iâm feeling particularly SUOMI FINLAND today. Here is a bunch of rando photos from around Kampong Glam / Arab Street in good ol Singtown that Iâve neglected due to all these trips to Hong Kong and Langkawi. Next up, Thailand and Myanmar..
Since Jakarta, chaos and disorder:
1) My roomies rescued a stray cat.
She lives with us now. Sheâs VERY VERY pregnant. My roomies were supposed to find her a foster home, but sheâs been here for over a week. After naming her Luna Tuna, I knew it was a lost cause. She is not going anywhere, and weâre gonna have a cat farm soon enough.Â
2) Frisbee Club has practice at 11.30 pm on Saturday night in the neighbouring sports hall.
Go home!! Go party!! Something!!
3) After recess week and being sick for a week, it had been so long since I went to class that I forgot the time and place. I had to check them. It was Week 8 of studies. I wish I had more school-related things to tell you, but you know as much as I do. Essentially nothing.
4) I was THAT team member in the school project group chat. âWHAT SLIDES WERE WE SUPPOSED TO PREPARE? Where am I? WhO AM I?â
5) I took myself on a date to the National Museum of Singapore. Singapore was rainy, as always, but it was my first time downtown in weeks, and I loved everything about it.
6) My laptop broke around the same time as my digestive system, and both of these occurrences have made my life spiralling down into chaos. It is surprisingly hard to do anything nowadays without your laptop, especially if you work remotely for a tech firm in Finland. Never have I ever been this disorganised, and I did refer to myself before as Chaos Queen.
7) On the bright side, since losing my laptop I have made incredible progress on reading Tolstoyâs Anna Karenina at nights.
Finnish translation: Perkele 666. Loysin kampukselta 24/7 tietokoneluokan taynna valtavia, uututtaan kiiltavia iMaceja. Puitteet on hyvat, mutta onnistuin pilaamaan nekin alta aikayksikon. Paristakin nappaimistosta irtosi parit kirjaimet kosketukseni alla. Mulla on viime viikkoina ollut silkka anti-Midaan kosketus, when everything you touch turns to shit instead of gold. Onni voisi jo pikkuhiljaa kaantya.
Kuten kuvasta nakyy, olen menettanyt myos aakkoset.
Jakarta. I donât know what to say.
If Bali was the party, then Jakarta was the hangover.
When we landed through only a thin layer of clouds, I got confused for a moment. Where did the light go? Suddenly, thereâs something in your eyes, like a grey, dull filter over everything. Then you realize that itâs all smog. In +32 degree heat. It gives a certain sense of confinement.Â
30 million people live in the Jakarta metropolitan area. It sprawls all around you. On the way from the airport it should dawn on you: this is a city youâll never conquer. (Vice versa.)
BROOO!!!!!!!!!!
The place you want to see is often only 2-3 km away from you on a map, but it takes you 45 minutes to get there by car. You cannot walk. The city belongs to the cars and bikes. The sidewalks are jagged and dirty.
Eating mutton for dinner in an alley amongst sewer smells, famished ragged cats, on an oddly wet table. Food is delicious. People stare. You wonât see many white people this weekend.
You see one sight, but itâs exhausting. All the cars, waiting for rides, and everything is given a grey hue. You feel like you canât really breathe. But. All the Indonesian schoolchildren want to take pictures with you, and theyâre absolutely adorable. The girls flock and scream after the guys we travel with.
You go to the Grand Hyattâs lunch buffet with two hungry Americans. You eat everything. You decide to see a movie. The movie theatre is in a mall thatâs connected to the hotel, so you walk. You have to go through metal detectors and show whatâs inside your bag. Inside, itâs all HermĂšs, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Givenchy, Prada, Bvlgari. The people are impeccably dressed. The kids wear white tulle dresses for the day in the mall, and their chauffeurs in huge SUVs drop them there. The contrast to the outside world is incredible.
Clubbing in Indonesia sounded a bit alarming, but was actually the most fun in a while. The weirdest thing was that the clubâs dress code was so strict that they made me rent heels. For like 10 euros, I got to spend the night in the craziest stripper heels of my life.....
We were quite glad to come home on Sunday. Or everyone else was but me, whose infamous food poisoning nausea started on the flight back home. Jakarta truly left a lasting impression, it took another week to get over.Â
In hindsight, I wouldnât have missed Jakarta for the world. It was one of the weirdest city experiences, but at least it wasnât boring. I canât put my finger on it: all my memories from the Big Durian are hazy. I remember my fingertips getting dirty from being outside, and my friends falling asleep on me on the Uber backseat because it takes such a long time to get anywhere.
Finnish translation: Jakarta. Tulin, nÀin, laattasin. Hauskinta on, ettÀ saan ruokamyrkytyksen kalleimmasta ravintolasta, missÀ matkan aikana syötiin. (Miljoonan rupian lounas!)
