Just re-watched Ozpin’s scene in Risk and I noticed that when he says, “And I hope it’s a risk you can take on me again,” Oscar’s leitmotif plays in the background -- the melody of which is even played with the same strings Oscar’s music commonly uses.
Typically whenever Ozpin’s leitmotif plays with Oscar at the helm, it’s because he’s mentioned (ex. v7ch13 “I guess it’s because of Oz, but, holding it helps calm me down, when I’m afraid”) or the moment is thematically relevant/related to Oz (ex. v5ch11 Oscar walking up the steps to confront Lionheart).
So having Oscar’s leitmotif play when Ozpin says this makes me really happy, because at no point is Oscar directly referenced, but the things Oz is saying come from the lessons he’s learned from Oscar. Oscar isn’t speaking or mentioned, but thematically, this moment is linked to Ozpin’s relationship with Oscar, so his music plays to emphasize that growth. Even little things like the tapping on the cane shows how nervous he is to do this, but we know Oscar encouraged it, so he’s trying.
Trust is a risk. “And I hope it’s a risk you can take on me again.” Trust being a risk one takes in spite of fear is literally the exact lesson Oscar got through to Ozpin in volume 7. Oscar’s the one who changed Ozpin’s perspective on trust and fear and secrecy (CRWBY even said that was the case, but we could already tell), so the fact that Oscar’s leitmotif plays as we see Ozpin embracing this new worldview and taking action towards repairing past damage says a LOT about how far they’ve come. Volume 8 has really shown us how much Ozpin admires and looks up to Oscar now, and aspires to be more like him.
I just think that’s neat.
