y'know as we continue to live in 'interesting times' I want to share something my history teachers taught us.
P.O.R.N
(yes actually)
This was an acronym designed to help us when analysing sources. It goes as follows:
P - Purpose: What is the purpose of the source? To inform us of new laws? To advertise a product? To relay a breaking news story? What is the source trying to convey? What was the purpose in making it?
O - Origin: Where does this source come from? A gossipy tabloid? A reliable news outlet? A low-budget podcast with limited resources? TikTok? Does the origin come with inherited biases?
R- Reliability: How trustworthy is this source? Do they have a past of misinformation? Is this a direct quote from a witness? What people are behind the company, and what control do they have over their reporters? Does it seem fair with its report?
N - Nature: What is the nature of the source, ultimately? Despite relaying news, is it actually trying to entertain? Is it trying to sway a vote? At the source's core, what is it?
My teachers admitted that Purpose and Nature are a bit interchangeable, but it was easier to get kids to laugh and remember P.O.R.N than P.O.R.
And if you're having a bad day then imagine the look on the examiner's face when they received however many exam essays with 'remember porn!!' scribbled in the margins.
