Hi everyone, It is currently March. Which if you didnât know:
       March is Endometriosis Awareness Month.
Endometriosis is a disease that can affect anyone with a uterus (Not JUST Women).
Basically, the tissue that forms the lining of the uterus will begin to grow outside of the uterus and can form in most any other place within the body.  Of course, it isnât common to find it outside of the pelvic area, but that doesnât mean It canât happen!
This affects around 10% of all people with uteri! Which equates to about 176 million people around the world.
Endometriosis can cause intense and sometimes excruciating pain, which typically lines up with the menstrual cycle--but not always. Which can cause a lot of issues when trying to figure out what is wrong during the diagnosis period.
The other main issue is that many people donât know something is wrong until it is too late due to public opinion and medical professionals believing that periods are supposed to be very painful. While they can cause discomfort and issues, a normal period should NEVER interfere with your daily life every single time you bleed.
Another major misconception is that Endometriosis can only affect adults, and not preteens or teenagers, which is a HUGE misconception. Endometriosis affects biological females 8 to 80 years old.Â
People who have the most common symptoms NEED to get checked so they can start the process of managing this disease because there is No cure. If left alone without proper treatment management, Endometriosis can turn into infertility, is currently thought to be linked to an increase in certain ovarian cancers, and generally just causes a crazy amount of pain.
Take time this month to talk to those you know who have a uteri, and even those that donât! There is so much stigma around periods, and around those with uteri in general, as well as about endo and those that get it. There are so so so many people that donât get the help they need, so please take time this month (And all year!) to educate those around you!Â
