Im weirdly in a Mario mood, do you have a ranking of the 3d titles (Mario 3d ones, Luigi Mansions, Toad, DK, any applicable)?
Hmmmmm…… i havent finished like, any of the mario 3d games so things are bound to change BUT
Mario Galaxy will always be special to me. Gosh I love that game. The nostalgia, music, gameplay, game design is fantastic and the story is really good. Mario games are notorious for having no story but this one not only had a story but had some deep lore pertaining to a character that shows up that is super sweet. I think it’s pretty awesome
I think Mario Galaxy 2 and Odyssey are on the same level (i need to replay Odyssey). Both are super fun to play, a little more surface-level story but pretty awesome nonetheless. The only thing is that I really like Cappy a LOT. I think he’s the best Mario companion in the 3D games, and you can dress up Mario which, I can NEVER complain. Maybe Odyssey is above Galaxy 2 then 🤔 but I really love Galaxy 2 cuz the second player option is great. Me and my old friend played it together where I was Mario and she was the orange Luma and it was so much fun. Also the music. You can’t go wrong with music.
I think Mario 64 is next. I enjoyed playing it on the switch but havent really continued it. It’s kinda whatever. Great for its age and on the limited console it had.
And I couldn’t get past the first level of Mario Sunshine man. Idk if I’m stupid or if the switch port was actual bs but it sucked. I did not like it :( i need to try it again. Maybe they fixed it.
As for Luigi’s Mansion… Idk! I originally had a ranking where Dark Moon was on the bottom, but I truly love all three of them equally. I feel all have great things to offer in their own ways so I cant hate it. Luigi’s Mansion is a SUPER fun game with a spooky atmosphere that I prefer over the more “kid-friendly” atmosphere the other two have. It’s so drastically different from normal Mario games and I feel it differentiates Luigi from Mario PERFECTLY. Luigi isnt doing the same thing Mario does, he’s doing it completely different. Sometimes I forget that it’s apart of the Mario universe cuz it’s that unique. It’s especially apparent in the third game. But the first game has music that isnt that good. The theme when you’re adventuring is great with Luigi humming along and being terrified (gosh I love him), but once you clear out a room, the music stops and you just hear Luigi whistling, which is cute except for the fact that is gets super annoying very quickly. Also the final boss SUCKS. But I adore the game and kinda wish the series would turn to a more darker theme again, just cuz it fits the spooky vibes perfectly!
And Dark Moon is very flawed, but I really love it. The level design is very annoying but I feel it gets much better the more you play. The animation is stiff but Luigi is still full of life that I barely care about it. The game is still very unique and stands on its own and I really like how King Boo is portrayed. Also the things he does it really funny. Literally saw Luigi was involved with his dark moon shenanigans and thought “i should really kidnap Mario about this.” Surprisingly I enjoyed the final boss, which I thought I’d despise but no, it was good. I also like E. Gadd’s character the most in this game, cuz he’s super chaotic and weird but he cares so much. Yeah him calling you every five seconds is annoying but when you think about it, it’s cuz he cares about Luigi and wants him to be ok. The scene where King Boo takes Luigi from the pixelator is so good cuz E. Gadd is genuinely terrified that he’s in danger. It’s so good. Also I love hearing Luigi’s “yellow?” When he picks up the Dual Scream. So good. And the music is the best imo. The gloomy manor theme is good and the different renditions in each area is great. Pls the final boss theme, very intimidating
And the third game I feel implements the things from the first two games well. Being able to freely explore the hotel is great. Having portrait ghosts that just bully you have the time is fantastic, but it has the more light-hearted vibes that Dark Moon had that made it more charming in a lot of ways. The animation is so expressive and bouncy and the new stuff they added is super interesting. Luigi continues to be the best protag ever an I greatly enjoy slamming the ghosts against the ground. The game is a bit longer and feels grindier but I love it so much. Every design is so good and generally every boss is fun (there are some stinkers but after playing this game three times they weren’t as bad as before). I love the addition of Hellen Gravely and this game doesn’t fee like a rehash of the first two. It stands on its own very well. There’s some great character moments too with Luigi and even Mario. And they gave us the mario bros hugging each other in 3D!!!! 3D GUYS!!!!! I love it. This game is so good.
So yeah I love Luigi’s Mansion can you tell? It’s one of the only 3D Mario games that has continuity too. I just.. ugh. I love it. I love playing as Luigi so much. He’s everything to me.
I havent played any toad or dk games unfortunately 🫠 but I yapped so hard that it probably dont matter. Is it obvious that I too, have been in a mario mood?
