Buck’s had a lifetime of not being good enough, he has no reason to believe that Eddie would be any different. It doesn’t matter that this is his soulmate, his supposed other half decided by the universe; Buck will find a way to disappoint him. He doesn’t want to give Eddie a reason to leave him too.

It takes a few tries, his mouth refusing to form the words. Regardless, he gets the words "are you hurt?" As soon as he gets Buck's confirmation that he's fine, he can feel himself start to slip away.
But then he sees something that makes him feel like he's been electrocuted, and he's sure it's not because he's just been shot. Buck's shirt is askew, his collarbone peeking out.
Eddie blinks. Slowly, but he blinks. His vision, surprisingly, doesn't change, but neither does the mark.
The mark is still a combination of the sun and moon.
Eddie's eyes slide shut.
