I think they're close, but not as close as some people like to think. I remember that people got mad that it was Carla and not Buck who accompanied Eddie to Chris's first school dance, but from what they've shown on screen Buck didn't really have a good reason to be there. In part I think it's fandom conflating fanfiction and headcanons with canon - we love keeping Buck super involved in every part of Chris's life in fics and such, but in canon they haven't showed that. I love fics where Chris calls Buck his other dad, it's a very cute trope, but it's not something I think we'll see in canon. He's his Buck, and that's a whole level of special on its own.
