"When hell freezes over"...
Be careful y'all, anything is possible now
As a Spaniard, it fascinates me the obsession people in the US have with controlling "bad language”. The way they censor s3x or f*ck. I can still read it, where is the offense in writing the full word? Plus, often you are actually pronouncing it (looking at you, tiktok). So I can say it but you can’t hear it (any time they censor tv shows). I can’t write it but you can understand it. It is all very confusing.
I remember watching Kitchen Nightmares and people dismissing Gordon’s comments because “language!”. “I don’t like the way you are saying these things!” they say. Oh right, it offends you to hear “you are fucking useless” but not because of the “useless”, because of the “fucking”. This never happens in the Spanish version. Nobody even notices the bad language.
We swear and curse a lot. At least half of the words I say (anyone says) are considered “bad language”. Nobody bats an eye. Even when I was teaching Spanish to foreigners, I would swear unwillingly, it’s automatic. Children have their own bad language until they are teenagers and they will use adult’s with each other until they are considered adults.
Is this related to religion? Does it come from some Northern European thing people brought along? There seems to be related to a loss of control or authority (don’t use bad language on me, I perceive it as an agression). It seems it may be more a “white” thing than other cultures thing but I live in Spain, all I see is media, it’s all a mix and it is always like... why would you say “heck” instead of “hell”? We shit on God or on the whore almost daily because of minor nuisances. The cultural shock is real.
