I can’t be the only one obsessed with these books!
Thinking about how when I first read the Upside-Down Magic books I would CONSTANTLY forget about Sebastian (who would later turn out to be my favorite character).
I have vivid memories of sitting under the slide on the playground at recess after reading the first two books telling my friend about them. I knew there were 8 kids in the UDM class, but I could only list seven of them. Of course, the one that I forgot was Sebastian.
What makes this even funnier, is me and another friend of mine liked to play superheros at recess, and I based everything about my superhero on Sebastian’s ability to see sound waves, and yet, I still forgot about him EVERY TIME.
Then, years later; I’m reading book 4 (Dragon Overnight) because it’s quarantine and I’m SO bored, and I read this cute little scene between Sebastian and Andres and that sparks something in my mind big time. Jump forward a few weeks, to the night of April 19, 2020 and I pull out this cute notebook I got for my birthday the year before but had no idea what to do with it. I decided to make this a comprehensive collection of UDM knowledge, starting with each student in the UDM class with their full name and what their magic is. Of course, I had to look up their full names.
There were some I already knew, I used the weirdest Mnemonic devices to remember them.
I remembered Nory’s last name as Horace because in Transformers: Rescue Bots Chief Burns’ brother was named Horace.
I remembered Elliott’s last name was Cohen because I was friends with a guy named Cohen when I read the first book.
I remembered Bax’s last name was Kapoor because I always imagined him with a baseball cap that said his last name on it. Always drew him with it too, who knows why.
I remembered Pepper’s last name was Phan, I don’t remember why.
I remembered Andres’ last name was Padillo because I had no clue how to pronounce his first or last name correctly so basically every time I read a scene with him in it I would have to double check with my dad to make sure I was saying it right in my head.
Idk if I remembered Willa or Marigold’s
But I don’t think I even knew Sebastian’s last name was Boondoggle.
When I learned that, I looked it up out of curiosity. It was such a silly last name.
To see that in any form of the word basically equated “useless” or “waste of time” really hit me. That’s the one character I constantly forgot. The one who had his little moments but never really had his own plot. He was kind of written as a boondoggle at first.
Then I learned about the seventh book coming out, “Hide and Seek” and I was SO sure it was finally time for Sebastian’s focus book.
Every other character has gotten theirs, if you counted book one as Elliott’s (which I do), and the title? Of course it was about the Upside-Down Flicker!
Then it was about Elliott. Don’t get me wrong it was a great book! But what made me even sadder was that the Hide and Seek part of the book WAS Sebastian focused. But it was just like 2-3 chapters, but those 2-3 chapters where Sebastian’s MOMENT, just for it to be ruined by stupid Miller (who straight up called him a waste of space??? Insane. Soooo insane.)
Anyways, idk where I’m going with this. But his last name is really fitting.
UGHH
Disney fix your movies
I just watched the Upside-Down Magic disney movie and I have COMPLAINTS.
Where are Bax and Sebastian
Pepper's trait is wrong
Where is Willow
Elliot's trait is wrong
Where are Bax and Sebastian
The UDM teacher got replaced
Who the heck is Nory's friend like actually
They got the flicker trait wrong
Nory's dad isn't the headmaster
Where are Bax and Se-

Found myself watching Upside-Down Magic on Disney+, largely to entertain a bunch of exhausted children. It's fairly cheaply produced and at first I was barely watching it, thinking it was just knock-off Harry Potter. But actually I got really into it, partly because although it's cheaply produced, the young actors do a really good job (especially the lead) and also because the idea behind it struck me as quite clever.
One of the kids told me it's based on a book. Does anyone know if it's any good?

Just saying, Rise Of The Isle Of The Lost/Mentions of her in VK Guide!Fairy Godmother would be best friends with fellow terrible headmistress from the Upside Down Magic movie, Knightslinger.
