From @suemcleodceramics who is always sharing glaze info! • • • • • Yesterday's post showed how a glaze applies differently when you have different water content (different specific gravities). 🤓 This post shows the difference before and after flocculating a glaze with Epsom salts. Both of these samples have the exact same amount of water (Specific gravity = 1.48). 🤓 Before the Epsom salts are added (left tile) the glaze is milky thin, the particles move freely past one another and don't stick well to the test tile. 🤓 When the glaze is flocculated with Epsom salts (right tile) the glaze is thicker in the bucket, the particles stick to each other and stick better to the test tile, giving a thicker layer. 🤓 The glaze also takes a bit longer to dry which allows for a smoother, even coat. 🤓 Flocculation and water content both affect how a glaze will apply. Every glaze will have different characteristics.
