#teatuesday with a #glazegeek warning The shape of my tea bowls has a big effect on the glazes I use. My open bowls (left) naturally have a lower drip point on the glaze swoop. This allows the glaze to run right off the piece in the heat of the kiln without touching the carved texture tucked safely underneath. Over the years, my bowls got taller, with a more vertical side (right). I did this because it makes whisking Matcha tea easier. But my drip point moved up too, and it no longer protects the carving. Instead I use a wide band of “catcher glaze.” The catcher glaze is very stable and slows the crystalline to a stop before the edge, while reacting beautifully with the drips running through it. Two totally different methods to reach the same glaze result. (Well, as “same” as my glazing ever gets, anyway.) Mugs are the next extension of this problem. Totally vertical surfaces make the glaze run faster, and they are breaking through the catcher glaze barrier. The result looks really cool, but I want to make the decisions about how the glaze drips. When I say stop, Stop! Okay, I’ve learned my lesson. No more using 16oz mugs as test tiles. 😂😂😂Really tall glaze testers are drying now. #lifeofapotter . Closeup of one of my glazes. I wanted something to give a fall leaf look to it and this ended up working out. Its actually two of my glazes layered. . . . . . . . posted on Instagram - https://instagr.am/p/CZcYkt8vvPQ/

Thanks to Rose and Matt Katz of Ceramic Materials Workshop, I reformulated my Satin Matte glazes. However, I also learned that applying glaze to a test tile is not equal to applying that same glaze to a vase, bowl, or what ever else. I've been so reluctant to use any of my bisque pieces to test. I decided to just throw 1 lb cylinders, not spend much time on them, and use these to test application methods of my new glaze formulas. This way, if something goes wrong with the application I won't feel I lost $$$ because I glazed a piece intended for sale. . . . #glaze #glazetesting #glazetest #glazeapplication #ceramicsmaterialsworkshop #glazemaking #cmw #wheelthrownpottery #pottery #potterslife #potterystudio #clay #whatidoforaliving #selfemployed #avlartist #wncartists #clayart #ceramics #ceramique (at Gerton, North Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPlwgaCDfqb/?utm_medium=tumblr

@inspirarte.ca That little cement-like stoneware plate and drinking vessel all treated with oxides only for a weathered look. Speckled clay, rutile, copper, manganese. Clear top. Inside is a root beer liner glaze. Reminiscent of stone cottages in the south of France with their “conque” or basins where running water was not possible then. Anyhow you can dream and see many things just by looking and feeling what a small vessel transmit to you...when it speaks to you. Enjoy... @inspirarte.ca #glazetest #slowproduction #smallbatchpottery #igdaily #potteries #alfareria #keramik #ceramics #cerámica #ceramiques #alfarero #clay #barro #stoneware #clayart #handmadeincanada #craft #midrange #makersgonnamake #etsyshopowners #art #madeincanada #craftsposure #artshow #artwork #artistsoninstagram #oxides https://www.instagram.com/p/CMFnDk0j1b_/?igshid=1r46zaqakj75k

@inspirarte.ca This afternoon I’m exploring new options and testing other glazing techniques trying to avoid the obvious and tiring results we see on many feeds. . . . . . . #glazetest #slowproduction #smallbatchpottery #igdaily #potteries #alfareria #keramik #ceramics #cerámica #ceramiques #alfarero #clay #barro #stoneware #clayart #handmadeincanada #craft #midrange #makersgonnamake #etsyshopowners #art #madeincanada #craftsposure #artshow #artwork #artistsoninstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CLvWoT1DbBP/?igshid=b0f7nx1nepgy
