I’m kinda annoyed that the Anna/Ariadne and Alastair/Thomas plots exist mostly within their own little vacuums, not connecting much to the main plotlines in any way except very occasionally for a brief interaction. And each of these characters really has no development or plot except their romantic plots. In all fairness, they are extremely complex and well-developed characters within those plots, but I want them to exist beyond them too! More Anna and Lucie! More Ariadne making friends! More Ariadne and Grace bonding over being adopted! More Ariadne and Cordelia talking about what it’s like living in a culture other than the one you grew up in! More Alastair and Cordelia! More Thomas as an individual with his friends rather than just someone who’s there in group scenes and makes the occasional comment! I feel like if we had more scenes with just Thomas and Matthew or Matthew and Alastair in this book then we’d have more of a precedent set for whatever will happen inevitably in COT when Thomas and Alastair’s relationship is revealed to Matthew.
