Since you said Arthurian Fantasy, do you have any headcanons for The Green Knight, and or Merlin?
For The Green Knight:
He uses he and they pronouns.
He would 100% say no to "Is kissing the homies gay?"
Theyâre actually a human but their wife is Fae and she and Morgan went way back, which is why Morgan selected them for her latest attempt at regicide.
He loves cooking and is often the one who cooks whatever meat he brings home.
They and their wife donât have any kids, but Gawain will sometimes send random kids there for some help, a nice meal, and a roof over their heads. (They all have a note, which says something like, âHey, Bertilak, hope you donât mind housing this kid for a bit. Thanks, youâre the best. -G (ps, canât wait to visit for x holiday))
He and Gawain exchange cooking recipes and his wife and Gawain exchange healing spells.
They loves dogs and animals, feeding them various scraps (or the best cuts behind their wifeâs back-)
Their castle is actually near the border to the Fae world.
For Merlin:
He's a Druid and grew up raised by nature after his clan left him for dead.
He has an inherent sense of the future, knowing vaguely what is going to happen without knowing any minute details.
He had a big crush on Aurelius. He didn't really do anything about it, cause he was best friends with Uther and Aurelius was busy, but after Aurelius was crowned king, he was a bit tipsy and ended up kissing Merlin. They had a few months of bliss together.
Uther had a sort of obsession with Merlin, and Merlin got too deep before realizing it wasn't healthy, which led to him trying to curb Uther's mania while still being too scared to do much about the atrocities committed.
Merlin tried to have a relationship after Aurelius with a sweet woman named Gwendolyn, who was actually a childhood friend of his from a village his clan had once stayed near, but Uther caught wind of it and became very possessive of Merlin.
He had and still has mixed feelings about Uther, which he just sets aside because it hurts too much.
After three failed relationships, he only kept in touch with Ulfius, and he completely shut off any sort of non-business relationships after Ulfius died.
Igerna was actually the one who selected Ector to care for Arthur and Merlin only went with it because he wanted to keep Igerna as happy as possible under the circumstances. (He knew Ector to be a good man, but wanted as little to do as possible with Aureliusâs reign. (He also didnât want him under Utherâs fire, but knew Ector could handle it.))
Heâs sad and lonely and wishes he could leave, but knows he has to protect the crown, as he swore he would to both Uther and Aurelius.
Heâs still kept some of Aureliusâs stuff as a reminder to the best part of his life.
Wow, okay, so I went from happy fun times to depressingly sad times, but, eh, such is Arthurian stories. Thank you so much for asking!

Aurelius kneeled as the crown was placed on his head. It felt weird. Merlin couldnât remember ever seeing Aurelius bow to anyone before. The closest he had ever come was bowing his head in exhaustion as he tried to stay awake, but the ever-firm princeâ king, would never bow to another man. Given his new status, that was probably not going to change anytime soon, either. The screams from the crowd hurt, made his heart skip a couple beats at a time, and squeezed his chest like a vise, but he could endure it by covering his ears for Aurelius.
Uther stood beside him, cheering the loudest out of all the crowd, clapping and screaming, âLong live the king!â at the top of his lungs. His eyes were lit up like they were when he was killing, but this time his elation was for something less morbid. It was honestly nice to see him innocently happy for once. Ulfius stood on the princeâs other side, his eyes darting away from the coronation every so often to suspiciously scan the crowd.
Aurelius was clearly trying to be a figure of dignity and respect as he stood up, but a grin kept slipping through, breaking the facade. It was clear how much he wanted this, how much he dreamt about this day, and the people seemed to share his elation if the unending cheers were anything to go by.
It took a long time, longer than what Merlin wouldâve liked, but eventually the ceremony wrapped up and Aurelius retreated into the castle, Uther, Ulfius, and Merlin being permitted to follow after him. Once they were inside, away from prying eyes, Aurelius collapsed on a bench covered in furs by the wall, laughing as he did so. âCanât believe this is finally happeningâŠâ he muttered, taking his crown off and holding it out at armâs length in the air to inspect it. âI remember father wearing this⊠He used to put it on my head and say that it would be mine some day.â
Uther walked over and gently took it from Aureliusâs grasp, plopping down beside him and inspecting the ornament. He looked positively thrilled by it, which Merlin felt he could mostly attribute to sentimental value, although the crown itself was nothing to scoff at either. The circle of spiked gold was inlaid with bright blue gems all around, each one reflecting the light at a different angle, creating an odd effect where they almost appeared to be glowing. âI remember that.â Utherâs mouth twisted into a smile. âHe even let me try it on one time, and we both know Iâm never getting it.â He laughed as he handed it back to Aurelius. âDonât want it anyway.â
Aurelius just smiled, warm and affectionately, as he placed the crown on his head again. âWell, Iâll have to get you a circlet or something of your own. You are the crown prince now, after all.â
Uther shrugged. âSure, until you have your first kid.â
Something about that comment made Aureliusâs easy smile turn into a sheepish one. âWell, you may have to wait a bit.â
âWhat? Youâre going to wait to get a queen or something?â Uther demanded.
Aurelius shrugged. âSomething like that. I know any marriage I will have wonât exactly be for love, and I want to make sure I marry someone who knows and is okay with that.â
âHate to break it to you, but in your class, almost no marriages are for love,â Ulfius scoffed.
âMaybe youâll grow to love each other?â Uther suggested, but Aurelius shook his head.
âThatâs not quite what I mean, and also thatâs not going to happen,â Aurelius replied, first to Ulfius then to Uther. âIâd rather find someone whoâd be okay with us having extramarital romantic relations, open courtly love, if you will.â
âSo you want to find some peasant girl to be your one true forbidden love?â Ulfius drawled sarcastically.
Aurelius laughed. âNo, and besides, thereâs already someone I like.â
âThen why donât you two get married?â Uther asked excitedly. âWho cares about status? You just overthrew a tyrant! The people love you! Marrying someone of presumably a lower class might make the peasants love you more, and what are the nobles going to do about it?â
Aurelius just shook his head. âItâs not that simple in this case, Uther.â
âWhy not?â Uther argued. âItâd make you happy!â
âWell, for one, I donât think weâre legally allowed to marry,â Aurelius muttered.
Uther frowned. âSo⊠sheâs a nun then?â
âNo, no itâs not that.â Aurelius started to look a little stressed out, rubbing his temples with one hand. âLeave it be, Uther. Letâs just focus on today for now, alright?â
Uther hummed in that way he did when he wanted to say something but was holding it back before finally nodding in agreement. âWant me to go stall the nobles?â
Aurelius fidgeted. âI should really be dealing with them myselfââ
âItâs your damn coronation,â Ulfius interrupted. âBe just the tiniest bit selfish today, you self-sacrificing idiot.â
That comment made Aurelius snort, while Uther looked just the tiniest bit impressed Ulfius said that to his king. Aurelius looked up at the two of them, then finally answered, âWould you please?â
âIâll buy you an hour at least,â Uther promised, turning around and starting to leave. He paused once he had gone a few paces and looked expectantly at Merlin, beckoning with his hand. âComing, Merlin?â
âActually, Iâd like him to keep me company for a bit, if thatâs alright with you,â Aurelius suggested, addressing Merlin for the last bit.
âOh, sure!â Merlin was a little relieved at not having to deal with a crowd again so soon, and while Uther looked a little put-out he soon recovered and left, dragging Ulfius behind him.
Aurelius patted the spot on the bench next to him, inviting Merlin to sit down. When he did so, Aurelius let out a deep sigh and stretched. âWould you mind if I rested my head on your shoulder for a bit?â
âNot at all,â Merlin replied. Aurelius smiled and took off his crown, letting it hang from his fingers as he put his head against Merlinâs shoulder and made himself comfortable.
âDo you think my father would be proud of me?â Aurelius asked softly.
âI never met him,â Merlin replied, a little confused.
âI know, but Iâve told you about him. What would he think about me now?â the king pressed.
âWell, from what Iâve seen with parents, probably worried?â Merlin guessed. âYou just fought a war and still have a lot of work ahead of you. Heâd probably be really concerned about your well-being.â
Aurelius laughed, quiet and solemn. âI really like that you give me a realistic answer. Itâs always, âHeâd be so proud of you!â but what else are they going to say? Heâd spit in your face?â
âHe wouldnât, might lock you in your room until you slept a full night from dusk until dawn, but of course he wouldnât be disgusted by you or anything,â Merlin assured him.
âDoes everyone really think I donât take care of myself?â Aurelius asked.
âI thought that was a fact.â
Aurelius laughed again. âOkay, maybe thatâs true,â he admitted. Absentmindedly, he reached up and touched Merlinâs cheek. âWhat about my pickiness with marriage?â
âWhy would he be upset about you waiting for the right queen?â Merlin asked.
With a sigh, Aurelius removed his hand and sat up. He leaned over and placed his hand on Merlinâs knee. âYou really donât understand what I mean, do you?â he asked, searching Merlinâs eyes even as Merlin tried to break eye contact.
âIâve been told I miss a lot of social cues,â admitted Merlin, his face heating up.
âIâŠâ Aurelius just shook his head and leaned back. âMaybe some other time Iâll tell you. I should get the kingdomâs affairs in order first.â
âHuh?â
He smiled, warm and gentle like the sun. âDonât worry about it. How about we go visit the library for a bit? Iâll show you around.â
Merlin quickly nodded and Aurelius stood up, taking Merlin by the hand and holding just a bit too tight as he led the wizard down the hall.
So initial thoughts for how Arthur dismisses Ulfius.
After coming to the throne Arthur initially keeps Ulfius. But later certain disturbing facts come to light and he dismisses Ulfius from court for the role they played in the crime against his mother.
Ulfius: But I always obeyed your father.
Arthur: That is why you are getting dismissed.
Ulfius argues that loyalty should be to the King no matter what, Arthur talks of higher law, to morality. This symbolises Arthur rejecting the old bad values, feeling that he can remedy the abuses of power that went on before him. Ulfius in my headcanon is a bit of a sleazeball, sucking up to Uther and happy to always obey him, no matter what, telling Ygraine she should be pleased a King is being so nice to her.
(A hermit called Ulfin gets mentioned in Grail Quest, could be Ulfius became a hermit in shame, as if even he recognised over time he was wrong to help Uther.)
Ulfius then says Arthur will one day wish for people who obeyed him over ideas of morality. It would be so sad and fitting to have Arthur think back on those words as he fights Lancelot, who many of his Knights have joined because of the ideas they should be subject to right above all.
I am certainly not taking Ulfiusâ side, but Arthur should be about someone trying to fight for ideals in a world that doesnt always make it easy, demonstrating why its so hard to improve society.
Oh, and in Malory I hear Ulfius impeached Ygraine of treason for not coming forward to testify to Arthur's identity; this, however, may have been a "staged" rather than a serious accusation. Might be he tries to have Ygraine testify but it backfires on him when Arthur finds out things.
And this may be coming in wake of Arthur having an experience with Morgause so he is not best inclined towards such people.
Figured I might as well draw Ulfius one of these days. He sort of has the appearance of a fluffy cinnamon roll but is completely dead inside and filled with loathing at himself and the world.
Aka Merlinâs Traumatized and Aurelius Cares About Him
I tried to write a happy chapter, I really did, but I donât think thatâs possible at this point. Iâm settling for happier now.
The celebration feast went on for almost three days. Aurelius had at first wanted to be more pragmatic, but conceded under pressure from the troops and nobles. Vortigern was dead, and a new king was about to be crowned. This was a time for partying if ever there was one.
So why could Merlin not get Vortigernâs tortured face out of his mind? He saw everyone around him happy, celebrating, but no matter how much he wanted to join them, he just kept flashing back to that moment. This shouldnât bother him, he never liked Vortigern by any stretch. Hell, he could never even tolerate the man and if a vote had been brought up for his execution, Merlin would have wanted him hanged. So why was this bothering him?
âMerlin!â
The soft, not too loud, call made him jerk his head up. Aurelius smiled brightly, waving as he walked over to the wizard and sat down beside him. âI wasnât able to get away earlier, sorry,â he said while still smiling, which twisted into his more usual worried frown when he saw Merlinâs expression. âDid something happen?â
Merlin just looked down at his lap. âEnjoy the party, Iâm just thinking about something.â
âSomething bad. What is it?â Aurelius pressed.
Merlin forced a smile, although he knew it looked strained. âCould I tell you after the celebrationâs over? Itâs just my mind refusing to let go of something.â
Aurelius reluctantly nodded. âI was going to ask you if youâd like to dance, but if you need a momentâŠâ
Those words made Merlin perk up a little. âSure! I mean, yes, Iâd like to dance. Iâm not very good at it, though. Not much practice or training.â
âIâll lead, then. Come on.â The soon-to-be-crowned king held out his hand palm-up, which Merlin gratefully accepted, letting him pull him to his feet. Aurelius led him out to where everyone else was dancing to the music and lifted up their hands, hesitantly placing his other hand on Merlinâs waist. âJust move with me, alright?â
Merlin nodded and Aurelius started pulling him along to the music, moving around the space in small circles. After a while, he spun Merlin around, making the wizard laugh in surprise. Aurelius grinned and did it again and from that point on, he would regularly stop and spin Merlin, both of them laughing. The melody dulled Merlinâs worries, seeping into his brain and leaving nothing but euphoria. The warmth of Aureliusâs hand felt heavenly against the cold night air, his gray eyes danced with lights, and with all these sensations, the guilt fell into the recesses of his mind.
He wasnât sure how long they had danced, long enough for his feet to get tired, before he felt a tap on his shoulder. He glanced back and saw Ulfius, who jerked his thumb over his shoulder when the two stopped to look at him. âSome of the nobles want to greet the new king. I stalled them as long as I could, but duty calls, again.â
Aurelius nodded. âThank you, Ulfius. Iâll be right back,â he whispered to Merlin. He brushed past the knight toward the direction indicated, his easy gate shifting into something more regal and commanding. Ulfius watched him go, then pulled Merlin away from the dancing because they were standing in the middle of the festivities and in the way of everyone else.
They walked over to the feast table, where Ulfius poured a cup of wine and shoved it in Merlinâs face. âDrink.â
Merlin hesitantly accepted the cup and took a small sip. âWhy?â he asked after he swallowed.
âBecause you put up with Uther every damn day,â Ulfius replied. âSeriously, how do you not have a drinking problem?â
âHeâs not thatâŠâ His voice trailed off as the memories of the screams came back, echoing in his mind. Ulfius raised an eyebrow and narrowed his eyes.
âWhat did he do this time? Murder babies?â Ulfius demanded.
âThatâs not funny,â Merlin muttered around the wine glass.
âI wasnât joking, I fully believe heâd butcher a baby if given the right incentive,â retorted Ulfius, a hand on his hip. âWhat did he do?â
Merlin looked down and softly, quietly, told Ulfius how Uther killed Vortigern, leaving out who actually ended his life. Ulfius looked thoroughly unimpressed throughout the story, but seemed disgusted, which encouraged Merlin to keep talking. When he was done, Ulfius grabbed the wine flask and refilled Merlinâs cup to the brim, letting the liquid spill over and stain the wizardâs sleeve. âDrink. You really goddamned need it.â
âAm I just being overly sensitive?â Merlin asked, his voice shaking as he took a sip. âI mean, Vortigern was the enemy. I hated him, too, butââ
âYouâre not being sensitive, youâre just not desensitized,â Ulfius retorted, pouring himself a goblet and downing it in one gulp. âVortigern was scum who deserved to die, and Iâd even say he deserved to die like that, but it was Uther who tortured him, and that says a lot more about Utherâs character than it does about whether or not that tyrant should have been tortured to death.â
Merlin moved his cup around in a circle, letting the liquid swirl. âShould I tell Aurelius?â
âWhy?â Ulfius asked, already refilling his drink. âNot like he can do anything about it now. Plus, people are happy Vortigernâs dead, how could Aurelius punish the man who killed him, even if he wanted to?â
Merlin fidgeted. âI already told him Iâd let him know what was bothering me after the festival was over.â
Ulfius groaned and rolled his eyes. âHeâs going to forget, donât worry about it if he doesnât ask. Honestly, you donât need to keep every promise you make.â
âYouâre supposed to do a lot of things that nobody does,â Ulfius replied, downing another goblet. âJust go along with everyone else, accept that, and move on.â
Merlin opened his mouth to argue but saw Aurelius walking back. He brightened up and waved, feet already tapping in anticipation for another dance. Ulfius watched him, looked to Aurelius, then back to Merlin, huffed an exasperated breath and shook his head, as if he knew something Merlin didnât.
