“Holy Place” Started in 1986 as part of Tyree Guyton’s mission to use art to uplift his neighborhood from violence, he incorporated found objects, the street, the trees, the sidewalks, abandoned houses, vacant lots, and nature to create what is now a world-renowned outdoor exhibition that has survived multiple mayoral attempts at removal and targeted arsons. This image is a detail of “Holy Place”, a structure built on the site of where once stood a house exhibit called “House of Soul” that was clad in vinyl records ~ until it was destroyed by arson in 2013. “Holy Place” includes elements rescued from the original installation.
