prologue: part two.
— mom —
i left sophia at home to train action some more. she won’t know i’ll be leaving tomorrow night. i’ll make dinner and then i’ll leave once she’s asleep. surely she knows how to take care of herself.
when did the world have to come to this? my thoughts swirled through my head. some intrusive; some of them being the reason i was leaving sophia with action. the intrusive thoughts really made me want to leave. i don’t want to shoot my child or myself, but what other choice would we have if we ran out of food? the questions over the months have made me break in more ways than one.
i had just kept wandering with cross throughout some countryside, stopping upon a house. it was nice. one i wanted before the world turned to shit. i wandered up the steps towards the door, knocking lightly. maybe these people had some water. i ran out 6 hours ago, and the georgia sun wasn’t necessarily forgiving on dehydrated people.
a man opened the door, some blood on him. either people were being killed or saved. “can i help you?” his voice was soft; kind even. that southern hospitality snapped me out of my thoughts. people crowded behind him, looking to see who was there.
i blinked before answering. “yes, uh— sorry. do you have any clean water by chance?” i asked the man. he glanced at cross and back to me. “you come here to rob me?”
“god, no. i already have all i want in the world. i just don’t want heat stroke walking back home,” i laughed as he looked me up and down. i would’ve agreed that i looked strange with a fully modified assault rifle on my back and a tactical k-9 on my side.
he nodded slowly, clearing the doorway and letting me inside. the house was beautiful. “i’m hershel. just don’t go into that room. things are… happening, and they need privacy.” i nodded. “if it’s anything medical related, i-i can help. i was a nurse in the icu. worked on the heart, too.”
hershel smiled and a woman beside him nodded. “this is patricia. my assistant.” i nodded slightly. cross panted and sat down, his smile bigger than i could’ve imagined. it was good for him to see some humans different from me and sophia. a man and woman came out of the room i was told not to go into, locking eyes with me. i could tell they were crying. the father was so pale and the mother was in emotional distress.
i walked up to them, my hand extended. “i’m emily,” i offered a sympathetic smile. i have a kid too.they smiled back and the mother took my hand. “i’m lori. uh, lori grimes. this is rick,” she turned her head to reveal a man practically in medical shambles. he needed iron, and thank god i had iron pills in my pack. i pulled out the bottle, dropping two iron supplements in my hand and offering them to rick. “they help with replenishing blood. i was a nurse.” he hesitated but took them anyways.
a few hours had passed. lori & rick had allowed me to see her son. said his name was carl. he’d been shot, poor baby. “so, what’s your kid’s name?” she turned to look at me, along with rick. my harmful thoughts were once again popped out of my head. “her name’s sophia. my pride and joy. she’s wise, just like her name.” lori smiled and rick nodded like it was impressive to know that much. “nice vocab,” he murmured, still keeping his eyes on his boy. i snorted.
“where is she? i bet she’d want to come along on runs with you,” lori said with concern. it was obvious on her face. she couldn’t know, but it spilled out of my mouth before i could even try to hold it in. “i’m leaving tomorrow night. i—“ i had to cut myself off with a sigh. “i can’t have her around any longer. i think i might— harm her. i’m not sure.”
“harm her… how?” both parents turned their heads to me.
“i just don’t want her to live in a world like this. i thought of creating a pact with her, but… she deserves to live and fend for herself.” they understood as soon as i said it. rick sighed with a hand scrubbing over his beard. he looked at lori with a gaze that said everything.
“would we be able to take her?” i was confused at the question. how would they be able to take a kid as dangerous as mine in? “you swear to protect her when you see her?”
“promise.”
i gave lori a picture of my beautiful girl and me. creases everywhere and faded from an old camera we had used. it was ripped on the edges, but she was still there. my sophia jane. i got the water i wanted— cleaner than the water i’ve had in months— and set off for home once sunset hit. i was officially leaving. it was time.
