Just came back from a Buddhist meditation retreat as a birthday gift to myself. Went a little crazy on the way back and bought myself more tea as a late birthday gift (because Treat Yourself, that’s why!!) at a lovely store I visited a long time ago that opened my eyes to the universality of tea. This tea specializes in African-produced teas of all kinds (even African-produced matcha and Tung Ting/Dong Ding). On this trip, I went with a really aromatic white twig tea produced in Malawi. Super excited about this new addition to my collection!
First nose: cooling and sweet, notes of honey and wet earth.
Taste: Earthy, cooling, herbal quality on the palate like spearmint. Sweetness similar to molasses, but less noticeable in comparison to the initial earthy, herbal quality. Pleasant astringency, overall mild and drinkable.
Such a wonderful tea to come home to!
Most tea is made of leaves, but this Japanese style of tea, kukicha, is made out of stems or twigs. There are both green (pictured here) and roasted variants of this type of tea.

If this picture looks like a bunch of brown twigs to you, that's because that's what it is. This is a Japanese roasted twig tea, both kukicha (twig tea) and hojicha (roasted green tea). It was sold as "kukicha", but in general typical kukicha is not roasted. The flavor and overall character of this tea is dominated by the roast, so it tastes more like other hojicha (roasted teas) and not as much like green kukicha (twig teas). One of the reasons I started this blog is because it gives me a reason to make tea and take a moment to appreciate it. Without that, I tend to neglect what is one of the most restorative activities of my daily life, because it seems like too much hassle to get the pot out, find a strainer, get the temperature right etc. But it's always worth it.
It doesn't matter if life is chaotic and you feel like you don't have time - make time for a tea break. It is so important to just stop for a moment and remind yourself that life is a rhythm, and rhythms need rests.

Kukicha
Kukicha is a traditional green tea from Japan. Our Kukicha is uniquely flavorful. It brews a light cup of green tea with a nutty, slightly creamy flavor. Kukicha can also be added to juice to make an excellent children's drink. It is a powerful antioxidant and is very low in caffeine, in fact the lowest in caffeine (1/10 of the caffeine level in regular green tea) of all traditional teas.

The combinations are endless! I love the mix of color, texture, and flavors of this blend. Kukicha has a fresh green flavor mixed with the sweetness of strawberry and helichrysum and the spicy bite of galangal. Pretty, delicious, and nutritious!!
