Everything is Somewhat Repaired: May the Angels Protect Lorraine Kelly.
CW: UK transphobia
The UK news media is generally absent of voices that will stand up for trans people*. So I was surprised and delighted to see day-time sweetheart Lorraine Kelly defending trans people when she interviewed TERF Academic Kathleen Stock.
Not only did she tell Stock "trans women are women and trans men are men", she also called bullshit on Stock's claims that she has been silenced. It was a sight for sore eyes.
Lorraine has been on TV since I was little. We would have breakfast TV on in our house and Lorraine would have the later segment, aimed at women at home after their husbands went to work, I guess.
Through the earlier section of the show they would regularly cut to her so she could let us know if she would be reviewing summer fashions or chatting with pop stars. But I would have to go to school before she came on.
As a kid Lorraine became an icon of this half hidden feminine world, that I would only get rare glimpses of when off school sick. Bright easy lessons on how to be a modern women of the early 1990s.
Given the demoralising state of the UK media at the moment and the baffling and bitter shite spoken by some of her contemporaries*, I was so relieved to see anyone with a mainstream platform stand up for me and my siblings, and I am so glad it was her*.
The BBC, which is supposed to be impartial, is shamelessly not. The US editors of the Guardian has had fallings out with the UK team over their deep rooted transphobia. And the right wing papers are obviously a nightmare. Pink News and Novara Media are two smaller news outlets that are reliable when it comes to coverage of trans issues.
Judy Finnigan, another 90's day time tv staple, has recently been publishing transphobic columns in the Daily Express with titles like "Men subjugated women for centuries now trans lobby is doing the same" and "Transgender lobby MUST read JK Rowling's latest masterpiece"
Recent UK trans allies notable mentions: Billy Bragg and Tori Amos. Thanks pals!
