#tutorial tuesday

This was the first art tutorial I did using the art program Krita. I was really nervous to switch art programs so I used a pretty simple art program to help me better understand the program. 

Usually I would Alpha Lock a layer to draw on top of it without going outside the shape. I learned that instead of Alpha Lock the thing to use in Krita is Clipping Masks which involves putting all the layers into a folder.

I’m not sure why but the edges of the oval ended up coming out quite rough when I added the shine to the side. I made sure to use a clipping mask just like before so my brush shouldn’t have gone outside the oval yet I was still left with a rough looking edge. I still don’t quite know where I went wrong so, if you have any idea please reach out via comments or private dm.

Lastly I filled in the previous gray area with blue and found a cloud brush in Krita that I thought was decent and there you have it. My first Krita Tutorial Tuesday.

If you are starting a new art program I highly recommend following a tutorial as how that person, in the tutorial, draws might be different than you so it might mean using/looking for different tools. Eventually you’ll want to know where all the tools are in your new program so following a tutorial is a great way to find them without trying to be creative as well.

I started using Procreate. Somehow I disabled the time lapse for this work, but I have a screenshot I took in the middle of making it.

A great part of this tutorial was how easy it was to follow. When it came to blending I got a little finicky with it. I probably could've spent less time and still had a wonderful drawing. However, the best part of this came when I was showing it off to people. I just would send them the finished picture, without an explanation and everyone at first assumed I was just sending them a random water droplet and they were confused. Upon revealing it was an artwork I made, they all seemed impressed. I say "everyone", but really I only have two people in my life I can show my artwork to.

I'm super proud of this work and I highly recommend following this tutorial if you ever need a confidence boost.

Maker: Art with Melody

I'm still using Sketchbook which is a free drawing app, but also means no time lapse for now.

The tutorial had me create guidelines to start off so we'd be in relatively the right places when creating the sketch. I think that guidelines are very necessary tool for beginners who without them would get overwhelmed and confused.

I wanted to put my sketch and line art next to each other in this section so fellow beginner artists could see the difference between them. Your sketch layer should be a bit messier because you aren't looking for clean lines during this stage instead you are sketching out where you want things to go and moving them around the canvas if they don't fit. Your line art goes over the sketch layer and this is where you make things clean and intentional. If you made a good sketch layer and planned ahead this shouldn't be too hard. If you're finding that your sketch layer and line art layer don't look too different then you might not need to make a separate layer for your line art. Let me clarify, if your sketch layer is already clean then there's no point making a clean line art layer.

I continued further with adding the hair elements. You can see here that I did not have a sketch layer as I had pretty clean lines from the start. Not going to lie creating the highlights/the lighter hair sections felt daunting at the time, but I trusted myself and persevered.

(I made the pallet in the top corner so I wouldn't forget which colors I was using. Because that got to be a problem as I went back and fourth on this piece.)

Then of course we have the final image. Other than the colors, I added shading to the hair and blush to the nose, lips, and ear. I went really light with it, because at the time I was nervous, I didn't really have sperate layers I could use for the blush. Running into the problem of not being able to Alpha Lock (Basically I wasn't able to lock a layer to make sure I was only drawing on said layer.) certain layers is what led me to pursue a paid drawing program as I felt like I was out growing my current one.

I'm 90% sure that this is the first tutorial I ever followed. It was a great confidence booster at the time. I couldn't believe I had made something so pretty at the time.

I also used to use the free app Sketchbook so, with a few of my early following along with the tutorials I won't be able to show off a time lapse. I highly recommend if you are trying a new hobby to make it as close to free as you can before you start investing money into it.

Definitely learn my lesson about making sure the size I'm drawing actually fills the page.
