Missing Loustat scene discovered in Anne Rice's diaries
I HAVE SOMETHING AMAZING TO SHARE WITH YOU!!
As I was reading Anne Rice's diaries in the special collection library at Tulane University while I was in New Orleans for the Vampire Ball, I discovered this intensely sexy scene she wrote between Louis and Lestat that never made it into her books. This is Anne Rice's original writing, never before shared anywhere online.
you can always channel the grief you feel from your encampment getting destroyed by SWAT with tanks and your friends arrested with AR-15s into art. there's always art.
OK⊠Nicolas and Lestat of the dayâŠ
I think itâs interesting that Lestat the writer in present day understands Nicki here in a way young Lestat at the time could not. Also, we have proof Lestat was on the verge of being talent spotted just as he was made a vampire, thatâs not in the final novel.
I also think bringing up Nickiâs money likely complicated matters. Nicki literally gave up all of his money for Lestatâs love when they ran away to Paris. Nicolas was always fine for money, but as a draperâs son lacked status, and in his family lacked love. He gave up the one thing he had: money - for Lestat⊠and now Lestat has vanished too⊠and just as his family did his whole life, Lestat gives Nicki ONLY money.
Itâs interesting that Nicki doesnât fight back when the others mock his money⊠It seems Nicki is aware he cannot understand their experience? Perhaps he understands because he sees how Lestat cannot understand his own experience? Hmm⊠I guess all too much of a can of worms for what Anne wanted to say in TVL, but interesting that she thought about it.
âOver the years I have seen this happen to a hundred montals, this isolation after the supernatural or some other inexplicable experience had altered their lives. They never forgive those around them for not believing and they are condemned to answer the most agonizing questions alone.
"His brush with the vampire had been almost nothing and I didnât know then know now. Yet I could sense that he was divided from those around him even more miserably than his talent and ambitions had divided him before.
His sorrow and disappointment was palpable to me, it led him to the edge of a terrible anguish that was almost audible as a cry. And it was no small part of his pain that the Italian maestro had found him a marvelous pupil and I was not there know it, or to know a thousand other things.
Why had I done this to him? He was picturing the shattered window and remembering how he had heard my voice just before he opened his eyes.
"Is that what life is?" he demanded now, almost in surly fashion, carrying on the manageable conversation that other mortals would allow him, talking about what they would believe.
"You get clothes and money in your pockets and the power to lackeys do everything for you, and you forget everything that matters? I don't believe it, not of Lestat. Lestat would spit in the face of anyone who would be ashamed of us! He sends me money.
What am I supposed to do with it? He doesn't even know about the men from the Theatre Francais."
Men from the Theatre Francis. He didn't say anything more, and the others didn't take it up. But they were thinking about it, the men from the Theatre Francais. And I realized what it meant.
This is what I get for eavesdropping. I learn that men had come from the State Theatre to see me perform. They had heard of me and asked for me, and Nicolas knew it was the greatest irony that I had vanished at the very moment when I stood to have a real chance. Maybe he still believed that Magnus had been one of those men
"That's what life is for us," said Jeanette, âsomething decent to eat and decent to wear and money in our pockets and I say leave him alone."*
"Then I pity you!" he said crossly. âHe wouldnât have given it all up for that."
"Of course he would she answered "You're the only one of us whoâs ever been rich, so naturally you canât be trusted or don't know anything about life. The rich never do.â
This infuriated Nicki but he didn't say so, and he half smiled at Jeannette.
But in an interval of silence, the information evaporated and I felt his anguish again, knew it as if I were peering into his skull. And I couldn't bear it.
(* for context: the previous page: Jeanette says of Lestat âHe's married, she's rich, and he can't let her know he was a common actor, it's simple enough," Jeanette was saying. "I say we let him in peace. He saved the theatre from closing, and he showers us with gifts..." so thatâs what she & Luchina think, as in the book.)
Hope youâre all ready for the thesis I WILL be giving on all of this I read one day! I did read some really sweet Lestat & Louis thing too, but I canât find the photo, but never fear, it isnât ALL Nicolas I looked at! (Though I looked at ALL NICOLAS!!!)
Did you know that Tulane University made history as the first major research university in the U.S. to require public service as a condition of graduation? đâš
Thatâs right: at Tulane, giving back isnât just encouraged, itâs built into the degree. Every student is expected to complete community service hours before they can walk across that stage, making civic engagement a core part of what it means to be a Green Wave. đđ
And honestly? We love to see it. đ
In a world where higher education is often laser-focused on GPAs, internships, and job placements, Tulane dared to ask a bigger question: What kind of person are you becoming, not just what kind of career are you building?
Service learning has been shown to improve critical thinking, build empathy, and connect students to communities beyond the classroom. Tulane didnât just adopt that idea: they institutionalized it. Thatâs a bold move, and itâs one of the many reasons Tulane stands out among top research universities in the country. đïž
Whether youâre considering Tulane or simply looking for a school that aligns academics with values, this is a reminder that the college you choose says a lot about the future youâre building. đ

Aimee teasing Tulane
Wanted to draw her without her coat/hat
they're so cute holy
âBy the time I left to go home â just like every time from then on â I would recall nothing of my tests or the different doctors. I would only remember whatever explanations Dr. Robert G. Heath (of Tulane Medical School) gave me for the odd bruises, needle marks, burns on my head and fingers and even the genital soreness. I had no reason to believe otherwise. Already they had begun to control my mind!â -- Claudia S. Mullen, March 15, 1995 Testimony to the Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments
