He breathed out an amused laugh at her dressed up comment. Granted he was used to seeing her in her pajamas while they gamed till god knows when. But now she looked just like she did whenever they had class together. Whenever she had an image to upkeep in front of their classmates and the student body. The image that contrasted greatly with her laid back and comfortable style she mostly showed around him. 

“I forgot to clear my schedule..” At least, that was what he was planning to say. Some stupid joke he wanted to play on her. But he never managed to finish the sentence as her expression dropped at the first two words. Clearly displaying her disappointment in him for forgetting something they had spent weeks planning. An expression he’d only seen when she talked about her ex while they still dated. “Ah– hey.. hey, I was just joking..” He paused, reaching his hands out toward hers and gently unclenched the fists she subconsciously made to calm her nerves. That or she made a fist to punch him. Though he sincerely hoped it was the former. Despite her height, she really could pack a punch. 

“I.. was waiting for you to show up.” He mumbled out sheepishly, ducking his head back into the dorm to grab his jacket by the door and hide the flustered look on his face. God help him. They hadn’t even started the actual date yet and he was already a mess around her. But wasn’t he always? Without a second thought, he slipped his arms through his sleeves and turned to face her as his hand instinctively reached out for hers to hold. “We aren’t meeting up with any of your friends for a double date again right?”

He didn’t want to look even weaker in front of someone so sweet and helpful. Weak, Ray was so weak.. He had to prove to everyone that he wasn’t as weak and as useless as he might look. How could he possibly accept help from anyone in this sorry state? No.. He couldn’t

He had to put on a brave face, so that she wouldn’t worry. She had enough worries as it is, even though Ray kept trying to shield her from as much as possible. Just to ease her mind a little.

The crowd that seems to swarm the local park was never a sight to behold nor something impressionable, for this place would be much better without so many people doing Gods know what here. Some threw parties, drink, smoke, weep about their problems, fight with others, engagement, divorce, whatever...None of that was any of her business, even with headphones on it was hard not to overhear how loud a human being can be at times. To find a nice tree to read while listening to music wasn’t hard, but to keep it deserted without other human beings crowding to said area was even tougher. 

Silver eyes were firmly intent on reading the book she had borrowed from her friend, Weiss. Though Ruby does happen to look up for a moment, only to follow the feminine figure that walks past her, lowering her book slightly...She looks down, grabbing hold of a phone that must have slipped out her pocket. A sigh escape past the teens lips, to part with her part of leaning against the tree would be a sacrifice worth taking to return the item to the woman, instead of the woman panicking much later to find it at her own home. 

With that, the girl placed her piece of literature away within the safety of her book bag. Picking up the phone only to break into a brief jog, as well, have to call to get the brunette’s attention. It’s only when she gently tugs at the back of shirt does she gain such attention, holding the phone out the woman before her. 

“You dropped this, miss...I...I don’t think...Er, it would be a pain in the arse to have lost your phone and kinda have to wonder where it is later...”

“I meant every word.” It felt strange to not have to lie about his feelings for her anymore. As soon as she began dating her ex, he told himself to be careful. Warned himself that their relationship would only stay as friends. Hell, his friends even warmed him that he should not get too attached to her. That she was out of his league. But how could he not? She was always there with him. From pounding on his door for hogging the WiFi at night to her infectious laughter whenever she beat him in a match. Granted half of those wins were won by cheating but she’d still laugh and remind him. Or those moments where she showed up at his dorm in tears and he practically fought with himself on whether he should confess his feelings or not. 

                                      How could he not fall in love with her? 

He couldn’t help it and stepped closer, taking both of her hands in his and gently pulled her into his arms. “I know I’m not popular or as well liked as he is. But that also means I’m not going to know a ton of other girls to look at.” His eyes fell close as he heard her let out something that resembled a giggle at his attempt to lighten the atmosphere. God, he didn’t know how much he missed that sound. “But.. I think I’m capable enough of making you hap– making sure you won’t cry.”
