Title: A Man Singing by Candlelight Artist: Adam de Coster (Flemish, ca. 1586-1643) Date: between 1625 and 1635 Genre: genre art, tronie Period: Baroque Movement: Tenebrism Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 123 cm (48.4 in) high x 93 cm (36.6 in) wide Location: National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin
Adam de Coster was one of the "Antwerp Caravaggisti," who were strongly influenced by Caravaggio's chiaroscuro effects. He painted many genre scenes that, like this one, focused on the contrast between illumination and shadow. Johannes Vermeer (NL, 1632 - 1675)
Girl with a Pearl Earring, 1665. Oil on canvas 44.5 cm × 39 cm (17.5 in × 15 in). Mauritshuis, The Hague.
The most remarkable detail of this ‘tronie’, is the pearl. It consists of two brushstrokes: one at the bottom to reflect the collar and a thick dab at the top. There is nothing more, not even a silver hook.
