I worked 4th of July in Vegas...
So it was a pretty decent 4th of JulyĀ because I knew everything will happen after the fireworksĀ and I worked mid-shift/2nd shift. We were overbooked in day shift because our damn director decided it was okay to book elective casesĀ so we had our dayshift staff that volunteered to work the holiday & then our 1st call and 3rd call staff. I was 2nd call & they asked me if it was okay to skip me because the 3rd call nurse is willing to come in because her surgeon booked an elective spineĀ caseĀ and of course I said yes, use me as back-up or else I would be doing a 16 hour shiftĀ 0630 AM to 11 PM. oh hell no lol. So when I came in for my shift, there were only 4 cases left over & I found out thereās no charge nurse so I automatically became charge nurse for the holiday...OH FML.Ā
Well lucky for me, we finished our cases and by 9 pm we decided to watch the fireworks in the rooftop of our hospital. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.
Then, in perfect timing, by almost 10 PM...our trauma pagers went off...

This is why I am going to hell
So a little dark humor. A few nights ago we had a multiple GSW to the chest. Coded en route. We did a resuscitative thoracotomy, chest tubes, the whole trauma resuscitation. Any way called the code and the surgeon was closing the chest for the medical examiner to come pick up the body. When he was done suturing he patted the patients shoulder and said "Sir, I hope you feel better soon". I snorted out loud.

Mastering this ABCDEFGHI mnemonic is vital when assessing trauma patients, especially if you're an emergency nurse. The purpose of primary assessment is to immediately address life-threatening conditions, taking action where needed and preserving the life of the patient.
Funny Nursing Story
So at my hospital I work at the orthopedics unit only had three patients so the whole unit I ly had a nurse and CNA working it. The two of them are all on their own. They were in a patients room doing some wound care on a patientās back. The CNA helped the patient sit up in the bed while the nurse did the wound care.
WELL, the CNA that morning donated blood and didnāt follow the post donation rules like (drink plenty of water, eat a high protein meal, stay away from caffeine and alcohol) and she passed out right in front of the patient. So the patient and the nurse are like:
The nurse didnāt know what tf was wrong with her and she was all alone on this unit with a heavy patient who is out of bed SO she decides to hit the CODE BLUE button. Yeah. She called a code for her CNA. The trauma doctor, hospital ist, respitory therapist, icu nurses, trauma nurses, and clinical supervisor all rush into the room just to find out that there is no code. Just the CNA passed for some reason. I asked the CNA about it and she said all she remembers is waking up to the crash cart being opened up in front of her with a million people in the room.
My charge nurse wasnāt mad at the nurse because she understood that she was alone and didnāt know what to do. But yeah. Pretty funny
