History is a funny thing. For some, history is what happened 10 days ago, while for others it may point to a time many thousands of years ago. Regardless, it points to a time in the past that we reflect on today. This tower is a landmark for Lisbon...the Tower of Belem as it is called dates back to the early 1500's when then King John II of Portugal requested better defenses of the city. It was strategically located near where the Tagus river meets the Atlantic Ocean and can serve both as a lookout & defensive tower. Now it stands as a monument...not too far from the one commending the Age of Discovery and Portugal's dominating role in exploration. . .
