alright i could get really silly on this but i won't. i could also go into so much detail about why i also think he's a sub, but let's acknowledge first that those are different things and don't always come together. so i'm just going to talk about Robert bottoming and try not to make jokes.
tops and bottoms have been using specific ways of Presenting Themselves to indicate their preference since forever (or at least since ancient greeks used to do it). it's a tradition among queer people, especially for men having sex with men. does that mean every single person in real life follows that pattern? no, of course not. and i would not feel comfortable speculating in this way about a real life person. but fictionally speaking, Robert - who was having gay sex on the down low - looking the way he looked in 2014... he was conveying bottom. and Aaron has been conveying top his whole adult life. you can call them "stereotypes" if you like, or "tropes", but they're literally the way that men who have sex with men (and women who have sex with women) can communicate non-verbally what they're looking for, similar to hanky code, and queer men have been doing this for fucking thousands of years.
continuing this pattern, look at the other men Robert has shown an interest in or been with recently. Owen and Kev. both similar types to Aaron. Kev especially conveying top. then with Lawrence, Robert put the condom on Lawrence's side of the bed, implying that Lawrence would be the one wearing it. implying that Lawrence would be giving and he would be receiving. plus, he started out at Lawrence's company leading him on. he couldn't have known back then about Lawrence's issues with intimacy, so there was obviously part of him that would have been prepared to have sex with Lawrence for power and/or money. him playing "needy little PA flashing [his] tail at the boss" (Lawrence's words) is not exactly a role one would associate with topping. he was at least okay with the idea of getting fucked by Lawrence back then, because he was okay with playing the part of Lawrence's pretty young thing.
i also think there's a reason Chrissie was Not Enough but Aaron is Enough, aside from the way that Aaron understood him. Robert Sugden needs his fucking prostate ploughed. much as i think it's a fun idea that Chrissie would peg him, i don't think she ever would have and i don't think Robert would ever ask. she was basically homophobic about Lawrence's past until like 2016/17. when Robert says she is "sensitive" about Lawrence's "gay phase" i think there's absolutely truth to it. and i think for that reason, Robert would never have asked her to do something socially considered "gay" with him sexually. i think she would've been horrified if he asked and he knew that. but he kept hooking up with men on the side because he likes getting fucked. that's just how it is. it's not about needing both men and women, he said so himself. i think Aaron has always given him something he needed sexually in that regard. that's why he kept going back for more early on, before there were feelings involved.
