'casey must have something on the producers to put her in every storyline / chris must be blackmailing the producers/forcing them to rewrite stuff / oliver must have dictated to the producers to make john sympathetic / emily head must have been sleeping with someone to have rebecca so prominent'
I don't think Emmerdale thought any further than just the concept of two psycho husbands, so in the end they didn't mind changing Kev because it meant having a goofy funny psycho alongside John. They might have started out with an idea of who Kev would be but I doubt it was much beyond Robert's prison husband and considering they didn't even audition anyone else but Chris they were obviously happy to go with whatever he wanted to do so I can't believe they were that bothered about the storyline. if they'd been really passionate about the story they would have told Chris to play a certain way but they obviously enjoyed his ideas and went with that instead of the original so this was never planned as a jewel in the crown storyline for Robert despite what fans might think.
Yeah and Chris said he didn't want to do it if Kev died - and they hired him anyway. So I assume the story had already been changed by the time he first started filming. People act like he just showed up on set and changed the story when it was supposed to be dark and Ryan's time to shine.
And the shit I'm seeing about Chris being responsible for other actors to get fired? There is 0 proof of that. Natalie Ann Jamieson got fired/written out way before Chris joined because she wanted a story for her character - and then they killed Amy in the limo crash.
Both Kathryn and Daisy (Harriet and Amelia) said they'd basically been written out because they weren't dingles and the show didn't know what to do with them. Harriet was killed in 2022 and Amelia left in 2024 - is that also Chris' fault?
Like, come on, hate Kev all you want, but it's not Chris' fault they wanted him so bad it made them look stupid.
Also everything you see on screen has been APPROVED by EVERYONE! Chris might ad lib some lines and stuff but if itv doesn't approve, it doesn't end up in the episodes. He's an actor doing a job at the end of the day, he doesn't have the power to change a whole fucking show on his own.
It's people hating on Emily Head (for BLINKING!) because they hated Rebecca all over again.
Cool so anyone gonna talk about the fact that the change Chris specifically asked for was… Kev to not die. And not to change that he was abusive or toxic?
And that that Kevs more redeeming qualities happened organically from how he played him and the scripts he was getting…
Or that Chris himself in that interview said Kev could go from psycho to vulnerable to scary in one scene… so he wasn’t playing him as a victim? He was just not playing him as a caricature and making him multifaceted and human?
No? Chris evil? Chris controls itv and gets to decide all the script? Including who gets killed I guess? Cool

Emmerdale Lines I Think About A Lot | Part 2
an important skill to cultivate in fandom (and in life) is the ability to tell the difference between somebody who is engaging in thoughtful criticism and somebody who wants to make themselves feel important by making you feel bad
the thing the latter kind of fans often do is position themselves as an authority on fandom topics, but their authority manifests almost entirely negatively, and they are defensive about maintaining that appearance of authority and presenting questions about it as a personal attack.
if anybody asks them why they are in a fandom that makes them so miserable, or why they engage with a canon that they don't even seem to like or take any joy from, they respond with "oh so now we have to love everything like unthinking idiots? we have to accept all the garbage given to us? we have to endure the way the writer/showrunner/company mistreats us? stop forcing your toxic positivity on everybody!"
a classic and obvious example from mdzs/cql fandom are the jiang cheng antis whose entire fandom experience is defined by aggressively hating a fictional character and berating other fans as morally bankrupt and delusional, and insisting to outlandish degrees that they understand the real meaning of how terrible the character is, and therefore the themes of the book/show, better than all the rest of the foolish, unthinking fans who lack their insight.
another classic and obvious example from kpop are the akgaes/solo fans, or the subset of fans obsessed with mistreatment narratives. a big part of this is always claiming to have special knowledge about real intentions or motivations, and they will state those claims in superior or self-pitying ways that sound like "oh i wish i could mindlessly love this the way you do. i wish i could be uncritical. but i can see the truth of how bad it is so i just can't. it's so unfair that i'm not allowed to love things, but that's my burden to bear."
that's two examples but these people exist in every fandom. they are the ones who make you earnestly wonder "why are you in a fandom that makes you so unhappy?" then you see how much engagement they get, how actively and completely they submerge themselves in the echo chamber they've created, and it makes sense.
the thing is, it's easy to shame people into feeling bad by claiming to know better, even if what you are saying is nonsense. that's a foundational principle of the internet. (and religion. and politics. and the worst kinds of online activism. etc.)
i don't even think most of these fans are doing it on purpose. i think negativity farms engagement, and people mistake engagement for connection, and lonely, miserable people desperately want connection. one way to achieve a pale facsimile of connection in fandom is for your primary mode of interaction to consist of preying on other people's anxiety about liking things that are bad or wrong or harmful.

if emmerdale wanted to make things right with me they'd give robert a storyline where he actually has some sort of medical repercussions for being the man who has been hit on the head maybe the most times in the world
