You step into the bar.
The loud music, the smell of alcohol, and wisps of smoke wrap around you instantly.
This was the last place the victim had been seen alive.
She was close to one of the employees here.
You were tasked to talk to him while the rest of Vagastrom collected information elsewhere.
“Excuse me–”
The bartender turns.
You almost gasp at the familiar face.
Tomoya.
You immediately look away, pulling your collar up to cover your face. Your heart pounds through your chest. It’ll be a problem if he recognizes you.
“What can I get you?”
His voice is flat. Disinterested. The same as before.
“Uhhh… Can I speak to… the owner?” You purposefully pitch your voice slightly higher. The last time he saw you, you were a man.
Silence.
You don’t look up, but you feel it. His gaze. Lingering. Studying.
Did he figure it out?
“And what business do you have with him?”
“I have questions. About a friend.”
A pause.
“Boss,” Tomoya calls over his shoulder. “Someone for you.”
He leaves just like that, disappearing behind the back door.
You sigh in relief.
A large man with a gentle smile walks up to you.
“What’s up?”
“Hi. I’m sorry to disturb you but I wanted to ask you about her.”
You show him a picture of the victim.
His expression darkens. He must’ve heard the news already.
“Alright. Should we speak outside? It’s a bit loud in here.”
You nod.
___
The owner takes you through the employee backdoor.
The alley behind the bar is starkly quiet.
The man leans against the wall, lighting a cigarette.
He offers the pack to you.
“Want one?”
“No thank you.”
Instead you pull out your notes.
You start with the basic things. How they met. How close they were, when he saw her last.
He answers them all with ease.
Then you shift,
“It seems you are aware of her death,” you say carefully. “How did you hear about it?”
The question seems to linger.
He exhales slowly, smoke curling between you.
“Funny thing…” he mutters. “I was gonna ask you the same thing.”
Your grip tightens slightly around your notebook.
His eyes flicker toward you. No grief. Just hollow.
“People like you always show up after.”
You swallow.
“...After what?”
He smiles. Too wide.
“After someone sees something they shouldn’t.”
Your stomach drops.
He straightens, dropping the cigar from his fingers.
“She wouldn’t stop screaming…” His voice distorts– 5 voices overlapping— no fighting against each other.
“So I made her quiet.”
His shoulders jerk violently. You step back immediately.
His arm splits, not cleanly, like it’s forcing its way out from beneath his skin.
Purple veins crawl up his arms. His neck. His eyes.
Spreading, pulsing.
His shadow stretches against the long alley wall– wrong, irregular, inhuman.
The door slams open behind you.
Great. The last thing you needed was a random witness.
“Oi.” Footsteps. Calm. Unhurried. “What the hell is that?”
Your eyes widen.
"T-Tomoya?"
He doesn’t wait for an answer. He steps out in front of you, hands still in his pockets.
“You have to go back inside. Now”
“And what’s a scrawny kid like you gonna do?”
You hold his arm, trying to pull him back from danger.
But it’s too late.
The anomaly lunges.
Tomoya clicks his tongue, pulling one hand free.
He swings— and something follows his movement.
A jagged, violent streak tears through the air.
The same color as the ink etched into his tattoo.
It SLAMS into the monster.
The impact echoes through the alley.
The anomaly staggers, then falls to the ground.
Its body glitches– flickering between forms.
Like it can’t decide what it is.
Tomoya freezes.
He stares at his hand.
“...What the hell was that?”
He seems just as surprised as you.
The anomaly starts to move, letting out a broken sound.
You grab his hand.
“For now, we run.”
The two of you dash past the anomaly.
The alley trembles behind you. A distorted, broken roar echoes.
It’s coming.
Fast. Faster.
You stop abruptly.
Tomoya nearly crashes into you.
“What the—”
You stand in front of a vending machine.
“Just a second,” you mutter, hands shaking as you punch in the code.
“Are you seriously trying to get a drink right now?”
You tap your school card.
Beep.
The machine clicks open.
Not to drinks. To something else.
A hidden entrance. A galaxy beyond it.
“What... is this?” he breathes.
The roar echoes again. Closer now.
You grab his hand.
“Come on.”
You pull him inside
___
The Galaxy Express hums softly beneath your feet.
Both of you sit.
Silence stretches between you.
Where do you even start?
Finally, he speaks.
“So,” He leans back slightly, “You’re that guy from the host club.”
You stiffen.
“Or should I say… girl?”
You sigh.
“Yeah.”
“I knew it.”
“I guess my disguise wasn’t good enough.”
“It’s not just that.”
He leans in suddenly. You flinch.
He inhales lightly.
“Your smell.”
Your face heats instantly. You shift a few inches back, covering your neck.
“D-Do I smell bad?”
A short laugh escapes him.
“No.” He slumps back into his seat. “It’s nice.”
You blink.
“...Nice?”
“Yeah.” He shrugs. “Like flowers.”
Your heart skips.
“My sister uses the same kind.”
Flowers. Kyklos.
This day is eerily similar to the day you were cursed.
Haku also held your hand as he stepped into the galaxy with you.
He took you to Darkwick. And you never left.
Your fingers tighten in your lap.
Guilt creeps in. You dragged him here.
You were so focused on surviving, you didn’t think ahead.
“I… I’m sorry.”
“What for?”
“For dragging you into this.”
You don’t elaborate. You don’t need to.
He studies you for a moment.
Then sighs.
“It’s fine.”
“You don’t understand,” you press, your voice dropping. “If you stay… your life might—”
“I’ve already lost what mattered.”
You go still.
What about your sister?
But even you’re not brave enough to ask that.
He looks at his hand, the one that struck the anomaly.
Flexes it slightly.
“...If there’s even a chance this place has answers,” he continues, almost a whisper now, “I’m not walking away.”
You hesitate.
“...Even so. If you want to leave, now’s your chance. I’ll do everything I can to help.”
He watches your eyes. The sincerity. The tension. The guilt.
Then stretches his arms across the backrest.
“You always this serious?”
You frown.
“This is serious.”
“Yeah. I know.”
A small pause.
His gaze drifts back to his hand, his thoughts clearly elsewhere.
He shakes his head.
“Yeah. Not leaving.”
You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
A faint scoff.
“I won’t.”
A beat.
“...I’ve got nothing to go back to anyway.”
Before you can respond—
The train slows.
“Meow, meow, meow. You’ve arrived at Darkwick Academy.”
“Darkwick Academy, huh?”
Tomoya stands before you do.
There’s no hesitation in him now. Only curiosity. And resolve.
He glances back, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.
