Here’s the 10th anniversary edition of Tom Meier’s Ral the Balrog (1985). In addition to being an evil wizard, I guess Mr. Partha is also a copyright infringing demon as well.
This is one of my all-time favorite miniatures. I practically knocked over the vendor’s table to grab the box when I saw it at Geek Flea. IN THE BOX. Look at that box! It is so good! The miniature inside is sort of deeply weird in terms of its proportions and its too-wide mouth, but it all comes together in a way that works, I think.
This was painted by the amazing @MisterFist. You can practically feel the searing heat emanating off of him. I appreciated the hell out of this paint job before I started painting miniatures, but now that I’ve done some of my own, I can’t quite get over some of the detailing in the flames and the armor. So good.
In Stranger Things S5 E3, while planning a mission, Mike represents Derek (4th from left) with a 1979 Ral Partha "02-072 Great Goblin with Sword" sculpted by Tom Meier for the Fantasy Collector Series, repackaged in 1985 in pack "02-072 Orc Swordsmen" for the Fantasy Armies line. This miniature's sword is bent because Mike carries his figures in a bag and dumps them on the table.

John Winkler, Ral Partha's chief metal caster, was illustrated in many of the company's catalogs, ads, and newsletters, and Tom Meier sculpted him as a 25mm figure. He is immediately recognizable with his beard and glasses, his Miami University T-shirt, a pair of thick insulated gloves, and often a casting ladle. His caricature was known as "The Great Ral" in reference to his D&D character, the wizard Ral-Partha, from which the company took its name. I dug around and found my Barbarian Hero (aka Swordsman of Khaldir) from Ral Partha set 98-006 Dungeon Party, one of the little boxed sets with Styrofoam trays in The Adventurers line introduced in the 1983 catalog. It looks like one of my earliest painted figures using glossy Testors enamels with no shading or highlighting.
When I played John Raymonds’ 1985 shareware game The Dungeon of Doom on a Mac 512K, I immediately recognized this figure in the splash screen:
You can download files for The Dungeon of Doom at macintoshrepository.org or archive.org has an emulator for the 1987 version The Dungeon Revealed, which apparently replaced this screen with new art.
