Which means that there was such a dramatic change in language over a period of about two and a half centuries, comparable to the time of the transition of Middle English (think Canterbury Tales) and Early Modern English (think Shakespeare). And like this dramatic change does make sense, humans have been in contact with other alien species for a couple centuries, they have new access to learning and exploring, like that makes sense. Language often changes when there’s contact with different people and new sources of learning.

But I just want to know what it would sound like. How is Standard different? Because I feel like this sentence would imply that it goes beyond having some new borrowed words. Has the way that they pronounced words changed dramatically? Also this implies that there are new swear words that aren’t as good as shit or fuck??

Like the first passage highlights a relationship that remains impressionable to Kirk mostly because of the physical element (as every time he describes her it usually has something to do with the pleasure she gave him etc.). And the second highlights a relationship that is more meaningful to Kirk, as it describes his affection and their connection, and how their relationship goes beyond the physical (not necessarily excluding it, just more significant than a relationship based on a physical act).

At first I thought the first passage was just kind of typical TMI writing style of a guy writing in the 70s, but now that I’m thinking about it - Lori wasn’t really in the movies (unless you count the unnamed person who dies in the transport beam up), she didn’t need to be in the novelization. So her character must serve a function here, and I don’t think that it’s to add sad man-pain or whatever to Kirk’s narrative. Honestly, her death doesn’t really affect Kirk that much, he refocuses immediately on the loss of Commander Sonak. In regard to Lori, Kirk largely expresses confusion why she wanted to beam aboard:
