Exhaust's damage mitigation works when a spell/attack makes contact. What this means is that if there's a Karthas ult incoming and you exhaust him AS he is channeling, it will cut the damage of the impact of the ult by 35%. Another example is Ezreal's ult about to hit you, and your teammate exhausts him just before impact, its damage will be reduced as if he had exhaust on him the whole time. It's not always good to use this while chasing. If there's a fed enemy that's not their carry, it's sometimes a smart idea to toss exhaust on them.
