How to Write a Slow Burn Romance

The Growing Relationship

Make sure the reasons your characters don't get together right away makes sense. It doesn't need to be realistic, but it needs to be believable.

Focus on how their relationship grows. Spend time on the meeting, the getting to know each other, the subtle moments and big moments that draw them to each other. There will be obstacles, arguments, and conflicts to solve.

Make the development of the relationship natural for the characters.

Start as far back in their relationship as you can. This will allow the longest amount of time for their relationship to be exploired in the story. If it fits, you can start when they first meet. Of course, if it doesn't fit your story, you can start later in their relationship.

Build the Tension

You want your readers to be on the edge of their seats when it comes to your character's relationship. They should be screaming "just kiss already!"

Add near-miss moments. An almost kiss interrupted by a phone call. A hug that lasts just a moment too long.

Add little indications of feelings. Soft Smiles. Winking. The brush of a finger. Lingering glances.

Pining. Give insights into your character's thoughts. Constant thoughts about the other person. Butterflies when they think about them. The anticipation.

Slow Burn, Not Slow Pace

There needs to be other plot points happening while the romantic tension is building. Your characters should be dealing with other situations while they are also pining after each other.

Outside Forces

Slowburns are not always endless pining and dancing around one another. Sometimes, there are outside forces that are keeping characters apart when they already realize that the feelings are mutual.

Examples: Distance between the characters, health/mental health reasons, job/work complications, family dynamics, character goals, characters are on two different sides of a conflict, etc.

I'm not big on writing romance, but when I do, I love to show the events and feelings leading up to the big emotional release. Here are a few of the ways I hint at those feelings!

Stealing glances when the other isn't looking

Wondering what the other character might think of a certain outfit/mannerism/activity

Talking about the other character to their friends

Feeling uptight/overly stiff in front of the other character (only in certain scenarios!)

Alternatively (and more commonly), feeling overly at-ease while with the other character

Accidental touches, and then thinking about it for hours or days after

Picking up mannerisms from the other character without realizing it

Wanting to spend an unusual amount of time with the other character

In too much of a binary term, you know? I’ve seen a lot of people (pretty fairly) say that making characters into romantic relationships makes them kind of shallow.

This isn’t true!!

People tend to think, and as such write, romance as the final step, but because platonic is almost always just a stepping stone to a different kind of relationship (being considered family, or going to romance) it doesn’t have this idea, which means it gets a lot of different types of platonic relationships.

And it happens subconsciously, and I sometimes have problems like this too. It’s less prevalent in the Soukoku fandom, which is really great.

Romance can have depth, and in my experience the best kind is the kind that’s just a friendship, but with kisses and a side of flirting, like Pippa and Ravi from AGGGTM! Which I never found felt annoying or forced.

The problem is hard to avoid when there’s no other chemistry, like when they just start dating instead of being friends first.

I guess that when I'm writing romance the focus is always on the feelings in a person's body. To me, that feels more important than anything the character is seeing or hearing. To be honest, it was always easier for me to write romance from Evie's POV because I know how it feels to be a gal who likes boys, so I guess I always just tried to put myself in her skin.

For her, every time Jude touched her, or almost touched her was A Moment, and I made sure to always make innocent moments between them seem kinda sexual, and build up that tension until finally - omg, finally, he actually is touching her in that way, and it's almost a relief.

It's always in the tension - the things that aren't happening, rather than the things that are, and always, the things that were sexiest about Jude were the things that she didn't know about him - the things she could imagine he had done and was doing with other people. It's like, the weight of his gaze on her, the heat of his body, still on the hoodie he just gave her, him accidentally brushing against her - someone else could do those things, and she wouldn't notice it, but she does with him. I think even mentioning those small things builds the romance.

Two people who like each other will always be aware of the proximity of the other in the room, they'll think of one another using slightly sexual terms, or at least in a physical way, they'll always long for more contact, even if it's just by being close and not touching. Like, the air between them is always charged and hot.

there's a couple bits towards the end of Lucky Girl where the tension is really building, and I'm gonna quote them bc!! I thought they were sensual without being overtly so.

“Worth a try.” He shrugs, and lifts it out of my hands. When he takes another sip he puts his lips against the very same spot where my mouth was, and I wonder if he did it on purpose. The idea of which is strangely erotic. I shiver. “Are you going to stay over?”

This is a scene when they are alone at night in her apartment. Later he asks her why she took all of the little studs out of her ear, and lightly pinches his finger and thumb against her earlobe, which makes her heart pound and she goes to bed and has a saucy dream about him lmao.

When Jude shifts positions next to me and accidentally presses his thigh against mine I wait for him to move it, but he doesn’t. In the dark of this room, where the only light is the glow from the television screen, I risk a glance at his face, and he looks right back at me, saying nothing. But I swear there’s something in his eyes, because at that moment they seem to glitter even brighter than the city lights outside the window.

um, accidentally? This is the day before he finally makes a move on her.

“Oh.” I whisper. “I like those a lot. I wish I looked like that all of the time.” “Yeah, I like them too,” he says. “And actually, you do. That’s just how you look to me.” And in that small moment his gaze feels weighted, so much so that goosebumps erupt on my arms as though there’s an electrical current moving beneath my skin. I feel him watching my face, but meeting his eyes feels risky, it’s always felt a bit risky, because I want him so badly that sometimes it makes it hard to breathe. I fear that too much time spent looking at him might drive me to start doing the sorts of things I know I will spend time regretting.

CHARACTER ESSENCE: WHY IT MATTERS TO THE STORY

“A romance driven by your leading characters is key to keeping your plot from becoming episodic. To put it simply, take this advice from Executive Editor Kathleen Scheibling, who quotes F. Scott Fitzgerald: ‘Character is plot.’”

Strong traits make characters unique, vivid and complex. They also motivate the character’s actions and behavior, working hand-in-hand with the plot. Think of Jack Dawson in Titanic, determined to be with Rose and unafraid of breaking class rules on the ship and in love. Or Peggy Olson in Mad Men, driven to break into advertising on Madison Avenue in the 1960s, and even with all her creative talent, naïve enough to believe they’ll let her do it.

Hi. Other users already gave you a bunch of useful comments about romancing Astarion as a good-aligned or non-evil character, and I would like to add some more.

You can ungroup him and park him somewhere far away whenever you enter a dialogue with an NPC with the intention of making a decision he won't approve of. It's cheesing, but it keeps you from getting stressed out about his approval levels changing.

Witty, pragmatic, intimidating -- Astarion loves all three approaches. If there is an option to talk shit back at the enemy, go for it. If there is an option to fling shit back at the enemy -- go for it too.

There will be a location where you can get chaotic without worrying about harming someone undeserving. Believe me, they all deserve it there. Great place for farming Astarion's approval.

Generally, choosing neutral phrases when agreeing to help allows you to dodge disapproval. Most of these options have been removed from EA, but then, once again, you have cheesing options.

Underdark is one of the best places -- Astarion approves most of the decisions your morality aligns with.

Good luck! Astarion is a bit challenging to court compared to Gale or Wyll, but he is totally worth the effort.
