Knowing that one of my biggest inspirations for everything that I do is a horrible person. It sucks. I have spent 10 years of my life making fanart for this creator, being inspired by all they do, cheering for joy when they made a new song and defending them because I so intensely believed that they were good. They weren't. Me and thousands of others were lied to. Their fans, their friends, the people who looked up to them the most. Why did you betray us?
Ruminations on time are plentiful in the book, and the video I reblogged about African (specifically Bantu region) conceptions of time got me thinking yet again. About a million things I want to investigate there. Especially in conversation with the Aztec conception of ācircular timeā that I studied briefly in a sculpture class I took, which focused on indigenous methods of soft sculpting. Truly fascinating! Unfortunately, I have no time to read for pleasure right now, and in order to finish sculpting ;) my thoughts on these topics, thereās at least two books I need to read. So rain check on that.
However! I wrote something related a while ago, in response to a video analysis of M&D. Gavin Young Philosophy (on YT) discusses the theme of āstolen timeā, especially looking at Masonās experience with the changing of the calendar in 1752. The missing eleven days had always intrigued me, and Young covered it quite well. I watched that section (~1:22:03) just before taking a flight from the US to Germany, and what a fantastic collection of thoughts that inspired! I was reimagining the time zone change as a theft of 6 hours (compared with the 11 days)ā¦thinking about how my life would be rebalanced, according to our rather arbitrary measurements of time, upon my return, while Masonās never could be. About how, if I allowed myself to think beyond my familiarity with ālinearā time, I could imagine that the 6 hours I lost and the 6 hours Iād gain on the way back were one and the same. That those six hours become some kind of pocket reality, where one might find only shades of humanity and creatures of the night. Those lost violently obscured histories? Thatās where they live.
And is this an exploration in fiction, sure, but I think what I ended up with, as my plane landed, was a feeling that we stand to recover more of these histories if those of us in the Western school of thought learn to think outside the familiar.
I am determined to do this.
How odd that we think of time in years...
Not really ā we experience years in all areas of life, a consistent repetition of memories and dreams.
But time is continuous!
Yet doesn't it loop back on itself and eddy in the shallows? The present always informs the past.
Right. So isn't it odd? The divisions are so illusory. Whatever comes and leaves with such certainty?
Time is such an interesting thing. It's the single thing that we have absolutely no control over. Humans have found ways to take at least a little bit of control over everything, even death, to a certain degree! But not time. I guess it's because time isn't really real, is it? It's a construct. Just a silly little word with silly little made up rules to explain the world around us. Why is it that we make up things to explain the world? Do we just want to think of things in simpler terms? Or do we want to feel more in control? I find myself thinking about these things often, but I can never think of a satisfying answer. Maybe I should sleep on it.
