Happy Tolkien Week and an early happyย Hobbit Day, friends!*
Did you know that the Dwarves of Middle-earth drew maps with East at the top? ย Thrรณr's Map is a great example, with lots of Old English runes to boot! ย I spent some time examining the great red dragon Smaug, but I was fascinated most of all by the moon-letters. ย Do you think these moon-letters could help me find a stash of neverending dandies?
* Hobbit Day, aka the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins andย the day that determines when Tolkien Week is, is actually tomorrow, Sept. 22. ย We are celebrating a day early because we have some other special photos lined up for tomorrow!

So because I have so much free time to spare I drew Thror's map on my chalkboard. I had to whittle the chalk down Winchester-style (aka sat there with scissors scraping at it like a wooden stake) to be able to write this small, and Smaug was difficult to do because of his overlapping limbs, but I'm pretty proud of the runes and the overall result! I hope some people in my hall enjoy it, and you guys too :)
Throrโs map. All hand drawn in ink on 90lb rough watercolor paper, then soaked for about a half hour in coffee and tea. After that I took a few tins of shoe polish to it and hereโs where it stands right now.
Iโll probably sand it and carry it around for a few weeks to make it look extra crumply. Also, moon runes need to happen somehow. Still, Iโm pretty happy with it the way it is.
Well, ok, so the compass on top is waaaaay too thick. That's what I get for trying to squeeze in just one more part before the bell. :/
