Jessie Makes Things

I didn’t realize that this was the 45th portrait in my 100 Vector Portraits series. I think I tapped into something there. 

I’ve been drawing my buns off lately. This is the most recent - a collaboration with an awesome new friend I met at Adobe MAX. I met Rodrigo Perez-Segini at the Max Bash, and we cemented a friendship over a night of wandering around the Las Vegas Strip and talking about art, inspiration, accents, roller derby, and dude-bros. We went our separate ways the next morning - him back to Chicago, me to Boston. 

Now taking commissions! I need to raise funds for my trip to Adobe MAX, so I'll draw you a thing if you give me some dollars. $100 (plus shipping) and I will draw a portrait of you, a friend, family member, your goldfish, etc. and send you an 11” x 17” print. $50 up front, then $50 when the portrait is done. Turnaround time is one week.

Sometimes it takes me longer than others to wrap my head around things. When bad things happen I sometimes don’t truly “get” that I’m sad or afraid until days after everyone else has already felt those feelings and worked through them.

Somewhere between seeing footage from the Charlottesville and Barcelona vehicle attacks and reading about all of my friends going to protest actual Nazis on Boston Common this Saturday, I had a bit of a freak out. 

Please everyone, be safe when you go out to tell white supremacists that they’re horrible. Keep your eyes open. Keep an eye on your friends and have a safe meeting spot away from it all if you get separated. Wear good running shoes. Please don’t make the violence worse, but make your point clear with words and really clever signs. 

The other day I told my advanced kids that I own more swords than there were people in that class. Then one of them said the following brilliant thing:

“Ms. Young, you realize what this means, right? You can finally have your own private army.”
