So Nephthys got her memories back, as expected! She's still struggling to acclimate a bit, clearly, but she has them back. Mirror!Nephthys is safe (in the sense that she now has to deal with hundreds if not thousands of years of trauma she was not aware of, but at least she's not dead), as expected, as she was restored before Horus destroyed the mirror.
Isis making a specific difference between like... erasing her own pain for brainwashed Nephthys' actions and going, "I understand your situation and I forgive the person you are now" (or something) is also understandable. She knows what happened. She was still hurt, but the person in front of her, who's worked on making up for things, and wasn't at fault for the original spell that led to all this, that's not the person who hurt her, and that Nephthys can't make up for other people's actions. And if nothing else, Isis can still try to heal from her hurt, while fixing her relationship with the person Nephthys is now. They can have a future.
Isis holding Nephthys' hand is really sweet. There's a lot of gentle physical closeness between them this episode and it's really nice, especially given past hostility from Isis and fear from Nephthys.
So Isis got a hold of Bastet and is attempting to heal her, which is good. From past experience with Horus, healing is really not Hathor's forte. I imagine Bastet is seeing through her Hermopolis cat servant's eyes to what Horus is going through, and that's what she's talking about.
Bandaged Bastet brings to mind the mummified cats that have been found in Egypt. Ancient Egyptians would sometimes bury their pets with them, so they could be together in the afterlife.
I have to wonder if Hathor's servant needs help with Hathor? Maybe Hathor is still injured from the mirror breaking or something.
(Before I get into it with Seth and Nephthys, I just think the way Nephthys curls her feet under her when she sits up to face Seth while he's kneeling is really cute)
A lot of what happened between Seth and Nephthys is stuff I've talked about a bunch before. And written about in a few fanfics at this point (in The Unexpected, Sincerity, Sun in Your Eyes, and Step Closer, among others).
So the last time, canonically, Seth and Nephthys spoke in any form was in S2E20, when Seth was being assaulted by the caravan and having the visions from the curse, and a version of Nephthys (I guess whatever part of her is in the curse) spoke to him. Before that, the last time they spoke was in S1E66, during match 3, after Seth prepared to put on the curse bracelet. They seemingly haven't otherwise spoken directly to each other for at least hundreds of years, on the night of usurpation/around then. Nephthys did cry out for Anubis in S1E5, when Seth beats Anubis up in front of her, and Seth seemed to notice it, but he didn't respond to her, he spoke to Anubis. Otherwise, they just kind of talk around each other when they're in each other's vicinity (e.g., during Seth's sentencing). So this is a long time coming on multiple fronts.
Seth is still in mourning: he thinks the version of Nephthys he loved died at Horus' hands. That's why he's so grim. Though at least he has the comfort it didn't fully kill Nephthys. I imagine he was a bit worried about that. I also appreciate the way he tries to kneel so he's not lording over her during most of the conversation. He speaks up to her. Not down at her.
Even when Seth is happy Nephthys got her memories back after all, he looks so tired (after everything with Horus and Hathor and now this, plus traveling, he has a right to it). And his sorrow that Nephthys is speaking about loving him in "the past tense" is heartbreaking.
Like I wrote before, Nephthys witnessed Seth do a lot of terrible things. Mirror!Nephthys wasn't aware of them: she was trapped when the spell was placed, long before that, and had little-no access to the outside world. Regular!Nephthys "loved" Osiris. And now she has to reconcile both halves of that life. No matter how much mirror!Nephthys loved Seth, she's lived a lot since then, and she's seen him do a lot since then. And that's not the person she wants to be with, at least not in the same way. As a brother and a platonic friend, sure. But not as a lover or partner.
There's an important distinction here that they're making: Nephthys loved him even when he was slaughtering people on the battlefield. But as Nephthys notes, that's war, and it's different. Not that it's necessarily okay, but that it's different from literally slaughtering defenseless humans who weren't in combat, and beating up Anubis. On top of all the slavery.
I think Nephthys is also pointing out that she made the curse, so Seth has reasons not to want to be with her? That bit is a bit odd and I guess we'll see how the English translation manages it (it's not odd that she's potentially pointing out he probably deserves better than someone who cursed him, but it's weirdly worded so it's hard to interpret). Generally she's focusing on how he created his curse sword and messed with the balance of souls and created despair in the world.
Nephthys trying to comfort him T-T (Well, calm him down, which is not exactly comfort, but at least she's at least vaguely comforting him).
Also Seth realizing that he doesn't love her the same way either, as predicted :D He loves Horus right now. He still cares about Nephthys. And he still wants that idyllic past he and Nephthys had where they were happy and there was at least less mess to deal with, because he wants to be loved, and as he notes, he doesn't like dealing with all the mess. With war and people dying and suffering and being the target of hatred and all the betrayal. It's a daydream. Not an achievable reality. But he loves Horus.
Seth's desperation as he explains that he hates all the stuff he's done and gone through is so sad. So many bad things have been done to him. And his trauma led him to do terrible things. He became a god of war to help his siblings, to help Egypt, and that only led him down a path of pain.
Nephthys earnestly trying to comfort him now just T-T He needs hugs. Glad he's getting them.
The gods generally represent concepts. Like Maat is the god of truth and justice, but she's also humanoid representation of these ideas. Nephthys is the god of peace, and a physical representation of the idea, and it's important when she's noting here that Seth attacked that very peace, by destabilizing Egypt and trying to destroy it. And she, as the goddess of peace and a god of Egypt, cannot help but be affected by that. He didn't necessarily hurt her, but the idea of peace is a part of her. And with everything else, of course that would help kill the romantic love she had for him.
And yeah, of course we're back to S1E5, when Seth attacked Anubis right in front of Nephthys' cell. Of course she'd remember that. Especially how he seemed to find some humor in the situation (or at least wanted Anubis and Nephthys to have that impression of him as a sadistic monster). Seth may have worked to move past that and to improve in his own way, but it still happened.
I think part of this is Horus' comments before about how he has to remember who Seth is so Seth doesn't disappear, but I think Seth is saying that if Nephthys doesn't love him, he can't exist. Or maybe something about how if he stopped existing, she'd be able to love again. He still cares more about her happiness than his own.
It's important to remember Seth has been suicidal for hundreds of years and has thought, in some ways, that it's better if the people who love him - Anubis and Isis in particular, and even Horus - kill him. He views what he does, even outside all the stuff he did as king, as terrible. And he thinks it's probably right that he disappears (S2E69-70). This is kind of just more of that. Horus helped give him a reason to keep going (because Horus loves him, and Seth loves him back and wants a life with Horus), and the foreign god ("FG") gave him a reason to keep fighting (to keep people like FG out of Egypt). But at least right now that is far and away. He still views himself as terrible and only capable of terrible things, with little to no forgiveness/a way to move forward, especially after what he did to Horus. He just keeps hurting the people he cares about, whether it's Anubis, Isis, Nephthys, or Horus.
I appreciate Nephthys bringing up how Horus loves Seth and how he visited her in the mirror, but given she knows nothing about Seth's side of the relationship, it's kind of weird to assume Seth reciprocates those feelings in any capacity. I don't know if that's what she's doing, but I guess she assumes they can at least be friends...? If nothing else, she knows Horus would potentially stick by Seth's side because Horus likes him. Seth wouldn't be alone, even if he can't have love. Someone would believe in him.
And Seth realizing Horus' love was really real is just the final stick of the knife. He feels like he screwed up. And that's all he ever does with the people he cares about. Regardless of Horus being honest to some degree, regardless of Nephthys being as okay as can be, it's important to recall that Horus was still manipulative, and that Seth tried to get away peacefully. What happened to Horus didn't have to happen, and it didn't have to happen like that, but Horus was the one who grabbed Seth multiple times, who took the mirror and destroyed it against Seth's protests, and potentially did so to destroy Nephthys' memories. Seth reacting to seeing, essentially, his wife being murdered before him, makes a lot of sense. I don't think he'll see it that way any time soon, especially since he's so given to self-hatred and self-blame, and a lot of things are compounding each other, including renewed heartbreak, but hopefully when he and Horus get back together, they'll talk about it.
So now the curse is seemingly coming for Seth amidst his doubts. Hopefully Nephthys is fine (usually Horus is, and he's not a god). But it'll be interesting to see how it gets managed. Unless this is some weirdness from Anubis because it kind of looks like his power. Or even Osiris, coming to drag Seth down to Duat.
And Thoth is plotting something still. That he's maybe wary of Osiris is interesting, but I guess we'll see where that ends up.
This has all been a long time coming, and it really is great to get here at last. Obviously sad for most everyone involved, but still. An important part of the narrative I've been thinking about for a long time (and written a few times in various forms in fanfics lol). A lot of things could happen next episode. Nephthys might have to talk to Seth through the curse destroying him (as it nearly has multiple times in the past). Maybe Horus arrives in time to talk Seth down. If this is Anubis, maybe he successfully drags Seth down to Duat. Or maybe this is cured Anubis and he cleanses the curse. The reason he cured Khnum was to get to the souls clinging to him, after all. If this is Osiris, again, maybe he's going to try to drag Seth down to Duat. Horus may arrive just in time to see it but be unable to stop it. Or Horus may sacrifice himself in Seth's place, which could result in Seth going to Duat to save him, and perhaps Seth and Isis teaming up for it (maybe with Nephthys too, heck maybe Hathor will go as well).
