robert asking bret “why did you remember me? did i say something to you?” puts bret in such a horrible position bc it frames it as strange/weird/abnormal for bret to remember a boy he just saw and didn’t speak to. i feel like robert throughout the book (and hopefully the show continues on this path too) embodies bret’s fear of people finding out he’s gay because anytime bret slips up in hiding his attraction, robert points it out and interrogates it whereas someone like thom completely ignores and avoids all the signs, and when he does suspect someone of being gay, it isn’t bret, it’s robert bc he, to thom, is the outsider. whereas thom will do anything to keep the status quo surface image stable, robert can and will expose bret and that’s what makes him threatening

bret being the only one to bring up thom’s parents’ divorce, and to bring it up and how much it’s affected thom repeatedly even though no one else, not even thom, really mentions it feels like an extension of “bret as the writer” so desperate to give thom a depth he simply doesn’t have in order to justify his crush
