How much do you think Matt actually liked Bret in canon?
Delicious question, thank you!
I think the intention was that Matt liked Bret a bit more than Bret imaged he did, but ultimately wasn't in love with him or desperate to be more than FWB.
But I don't care about intentions, RIP Mr Ellis, let's look at what's on the page:
1. I think Matt was gay. If he truly would've had sex with anybody, and he was that hot, it would have been so, so much easier and safer for him to hook up with a girl/girls. Even if we assume the entire Buckley population was as antisemitic as Ryan, there were other Jewish students at school, and other schools in the vicinity - he still had safer options than continuous queer hookups.
2. He liked something about Bret. Bret was so insecure, shy, and insular, very in his own head. He wasn't winning Matt over with his sparkling personality or conventional good looks. And Matt wasn't trying to win anyone else over with the excellent conversational skills he never used and his good looks. He invited Bret over to his house. He made the first move. He liked Bret.
3. They hooked up for 15 months, I'm not saying that means they had to develop romantic feelings for each other, but at the very least Matt must have considered Bret a close friend.
4. He asked Bret, "How's your girlfriend?" and Bret said he said it without any malice and that I believe, but honestly it seems a little catty to refer to Debbie as Bret's girlfriend after you've just fucked him.
5. Bret's internal monologue would have you believe Matt didn't care about their "break up," but he seemed so upset. He didn't answer Bret at first. Then he tried to play it cool. Then he got audibly upset and asked Bret what he was even doing with him and what he wanted. Then Bret refused to acknowledge him, changed the topic, and didn't even finish breaking up with him! Then Matt got high. Yeah, he seems fine, he won't miss you at all, Bret, whatever you say.
6. Matt wanted a new friend so badly he was willing to hang out with Robert. Matt wanted new friends so badly he allowed someone to take him to the beach, drug, and murder him.
7. When Matt thought Bret wanted to sleep with him after, supposedly, ransacking his room, he said, "What do you want to be, boyfriends?" Bret never showed any interest in anything like that. Matt had clearly been thinking about being Bret's boyfriend. And although he said it was "never serious" he was just reflecting Bret's attitude during their breakup. Bret had clearly never taken them seriously, why should Matt?
I think Matt found Bret very attractive and I think, romantically, he had a bit of a crush on him. I think, given the time period and the attitudes of their classmates, he felt quite lucky being able to both hook up with and be friends with the guy he liked and was smart enough to know he couldn't take things any further. But I think when Bret told him he wanted to stop seeing him, after already slowly pulling away from their public friendship, and then seemingly started tormenting him for no reason, Matt was absolutely heartbroken.
to me, e seem more suited for Matt. With all due respect to him, he doesn’t really strike me a jock (especially in the American sense).
yes this is what I was saying. edvin is not very jock type to me.
Matt is a green-eyed Jewish boy, far from Edvin's look

If we are here to speculate, can he play Matt Kellner? He is the only one missing on IMDb 👀
