Doodle of one of my main characters for THOJ, Kamari is so silly

Entry 5

"Well, it seems we have a volunteer!" She said brightly, clapping her hands together excitedly. It was rare for excitement in Twelve, the Reaping was often monotonous and boring, hardly a smile amongst the crowd. But this was something different. "Up you come, dear. Come on up."

Lily could hear her blood rushing in her ears, her heart beating violently against her ribs. Everyone was looking at her but her eyes were just on Petunia. She gave her sister a small nod before slowly walking up onto the stage. As she did her eyes searched for Fabian, but she couldn’t see him. Instead her eyes blurred from tears that would not fall. 

"What's your name, dear?" Rita asked, her voice ringing out through the strangely silent square.

Lily’s eyes flicked to the woman next to her. “L-Lily Evans.” She said quietly. 

"Well, Lily Evans, congratulations! District Twelve's very first volunteer!" Rita announced to the crowds, standing there as if expecting applause.

But instead, the citizens of Twelve stood in silence, staring. Petunia had been herded back into the crowd of children, no longer visible. Everything was still and silent for a large stretch of time until one member of the crowd pressed their middle three fingers to their lips and held them high. More followed, the citizens of the District all raising their hands out to Lily, the District’s symbol of goodbye, an act often performed at funerals. A sign of utmost respect.

Lily shut her eyes for a moment before looking back to the crowd and held up her own three fingers. She was moved to the back of the stage before Rita started to talk again. 

“Well, um…” Rita didn’t seem to know what to do as the crowd lowered their hands, her fingers twisting around her hands nervously. “Now… For the boys.” 

Lily’s eyes caught Fabian's, his eyes were hard and concentrated on her. She shook her head as she looked away from him, turning back to Rita. 

“James Potter.” Rita’s voice rang out and the crowd remained silent.

Why are people freaking out and acting surprised that Luke said “It’s time for the Jedi to end,” When:

1.) The movie is freaking called The Last Jedi. 

2.) We already know that he feels dejected and disillusioned. 

3.) We already know that he gave up on the Jedi - You know... the whole EXILE thing?

Honestly, why is it surprising at all to you that he feels this way?
